Be careful answering the phone

Nothing amazes me anymore. Heck, I'm getting letters now, along with calls, about the warranty on the car I bought last March. It still has the factory warranty, only has 5300 miles on it. I ask them sometimes which car they are talking about. The other one is 2 years old. I've had people call me about lifelong guaranteed light bulbs.

I get those calls about my 2008 Tahoe with 70000 miles on it
and about my wife's run around town car, a 2009 Chevy HHR
with around 37000 on the clock. Both are long out of warranty.

Before the whole COVID thing I never answered a call unless I knew the number. If they left a voice mail I would check it out or return the call. Now because I'm on several lists waiting for the vaccine I answer each call in case they're calling to schedule me for an injection. In our area if they call and you don't answer they move on to the next person.
I've gotten a ton of calls from "Suzie" to buy a warranty for my vehicle, a ton of calls warning me my VISA account needs attention, a few calls telling me I've won some drawing and I can get a 'free' something or other.
I wish these scammers would put their energy and brains into something better like solving real world problems or doing good for mankind. Always makes me sad to think they'd rather steal from people and do harm. Who raised these people?

Bank called me, said possible fraudulent activity. Asked if I authorized $76. charge to "Zomato". Never heard of it and advised them to cancel my card. My question would be "why is this considered a possible fraudulent charge?" Apparently, this outfit is well known for fraud and should be blocked completely. There is a Zomato company in India that appears to be involved with restaurants.

It seems that about every 6 months or so I get a call from South Bend, IN concerning my student loan needing to paid off or they will take me to court. I asked this caller to mail me a statement showing my "bill" and that I would pay it without hesitation and said he couldn't do that. Then I asked him school the loan was for and he couldn't answer. I then told that to best of knowledge that I had never set a foot inside any school above high school for any education and he still insisted it was my responsibility to pay it. I turned his number into the state police fraud division and I haven't heard from the guy for about 6 months so I have been expecting it to start all over again.

What is swat you?????????

The scammers have access to internet and can pretty much find out where you live with simple checking on line.

They then make a call to the local 9-1-1 in your area and claim a hostage situation/mass shooter/whatever violent crime they can come up with.

Next thing you know you have a ton of cops and a SWAT team at your door and you don't even know what the heck is going on. Happens to certain celebrities from time to time.

Like I said, they are getting more organized and more tech savy despite operating from boiler rooms and closets in third world holes.

Normally, I never answer unknown calls, but sometimes I like to play. When they ask, I always give them the information they ask for - wron as heck, but it's info just the same. Sure wish I has SS numbers for members of congress.

I got a call about my car warranty one day while we were at my little range on the back of my property. I asked them to hold on a minute. We faked a gun fight and then I asked what they wanted. Click.

This is one of my favorites, though I wouldn't try it myself...

I get a few calls about free stays at Marriott Hotels. I stayed there once a couple years ago.

I get those calls frequently.

Two weeks ago, just by coincidence, I made a reservation at a Marriott for our vacation. That very evening I got the call. I said OK I DO want to take the free stay. He listed a bunch of hotels in my own zip code. I said why would I want to stay down the street from my house?

He hung up.

My cat had a secret life ...

Last week I answered a call about Medicare Problems for my deceased cat!

AARP has sent him temporary membership cards.

Capital One has finally given up sending him credit card application material.

Some days he get more mail than I do.

My son likes to play with the scam callers from India / Pakistan. He learned a Hindi word that is a pretty vile insult, and when they ask him his name he says, "I'm Bob -insert vile Hindi insult here." Most of the time they hang up on him. A couple have cursed him and one threatened to call the police. That's pretty funny when a scammer threatens to call the police.
