I called Smith & Wesson today to get a 10mm bead blasted and they no longer performed that service for that particular model. Does anyone know of a good place/smith that does this work?

Most anyplace with a bead blast cabinet can do it in just a few minutes, no particular skill is needed. I have bead blasted and blued many guns, but I had access to the equipment where I worked. You might check local machine shops, auto paint shops, etc. A fine media flour should be used. 100-120 grit aluminum oxide works well.

Hi...

there are a couple of good threads on the subject...this is one:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...testing-5906-frame.html?highlight=media+blast

Econo Blend #4 from McMaster Carr is the best media to replicate the factory finish (IMHO)...

Some tips on the process:

1) The gun must be FULLY disassembled. ALL PARTS, including the extractor, which can be hard to remove and re-install.

2) The gun must be cleaned and degreased. Strongly recommend the use of an ultrasonic cleaner. Not cleaning that gun properly will contaminate the blast media and make it very hard to clean after blasting.

3) Using a blasting cabinet helps. I built one using a plastic box.
(my first basting cabinet :))

4) Compressor should have a oil separator/filter and a dissicant filter to make sure the air is DRY.

5) Barrel bushing should be covered with electric tape (using a cork, preferible electric tape)

6) if cabinet leaks media, wear a respirator and a mask (media blast gets in your lungs)

7) Blasting pressure should be around 70 PSI. Use circular patterns. Keep the gun, around 2-3 inches away from the part.

After blasting, clean the gun very well with water and some brushes to make sure all the media is removed.

Blasting can take a gun from an ugly state

to a factory new...

Unless you have all the necessary tools, the compressor and the media ...it is an expensive proposition...

The best route would be to send it to a gunsmith, like BMCM for blasting and he will do a fantastic job...

Hope this helps,

Guzzi

Has anyone ordered the Econo Blend #4 from McMaster Carr lately? I checked the other day and couldn't find it anywhere on their website.

Special reserve,

I invested in a blast cabinet from HF, was around $120 and ordered the media referenced above. Got less than $160 in setup. I already had a air compressor and shop vac. I have blasted the slides on probably 5 3rd guns and they all look new now. Bought a 1006 last year and blasted the entire thing. Other than the grips, it looks like a new gun. I did do a complete disassemble and tape up the important areas.
