Every body is assuming the bear killed the hiker! I'd like more info: Sex and age of the bear, a cause of death determination.

Had one here in the Cascades. Young man hanged himself, hung in the noose all winter and either the bear pulled him down and dragged him off or he fell down in a state of decay and rolled down the hill. Either way, bear came along in Spring and "Meat's Meat

Warning, inappropriate humor. But I couldn't help seeing the headline of one of the linked articles:

"Brown Bear Mauls Alaska Man to Death While Clearing Trail Near Property"

Maybe the bear was upset that the man interrupted its work on the trail.

One year in late 60s or early 70s we were on one of our many spring bear hunts in Ontario. Winter was late leaving and we saw no bear at all. Just a few weeks later a bear attacked kids at school bus stop. One child was killed. Same bear went on spree and killed several people including a elderly couple camping on a stream. I think count was 7. The Canadian Army, Reserve. We're called in and they finally killed it. It made the news and article was in Sports Afield. Turns out bear had infected jaw.

It was a black bear man! Let go of me!

Not sure what to think. Feel sorry for both the guy and the bear. The bear did what bears do, which is whatever they feel like. The guy on the other hand was either an unfortunate victim or made a bad decision that resulted in a bad outcome. I have not spent much time in bear country and can't really criticize. I know I made a bad decision about some fast flowing western water and was just plain lucky I wasn't a news article that the locals just shook their head about.
