As the title states, it has been almost five years since I last used a Zippo. I smoke quality cigars every day and sometimes--when I do not have time--I will have a cigarette. I know it's not good for me and I lost a few people to it. My preference is cigars but between meetings I will sometimes have a cigarette. A pack lasts me about a week. 3-4 cigars a day.

Anywho, I realized I was out of Bic lighters...no big deal got other lighters, decided to go with the Indiana Jones shamrock zippo lighter from the movies...boys and girls....I forgot about the overfill. Poof. I know three squirts of the butane but for some reason went over that and I had a small ball of fire for a moment. Good times.

Anyone still use one of these dinosaur's, besides me? If having interest, I can post pictures. Best, TH.

I'm a smoker. Yeah, I know, I know. Anyway I use Zippos. I've tried the butane inserts for them. I've tried the inserts that have that stupid little X of electric arc. Nothing works like a Zippo witht he standard lighter fluid insert. But, you have to be careful not to overfill. I once needed to drive my mother from Portland to SEATAC for a flight. Before we left I filled my Zippo. About 20 miles in, my thigh started to burn. We were running late so I was just bombing up the freeway, trying to make time and not stopping. My mother asked me why I was squirming around and I told her what was going on. When we got to the airport, I ran to the nearest bathroom and tore off my pants, surprising the other traveller. Washed my pants in the sink and cleaned my leg as well as possible. Drove back to Portland with wet jeans and a 2" diameter chemical burn on my leg.

Zippo fan here. I carry a USMC Brass lighter that has been my buddy for years. Lately I discovered that flints were nearly impossible to find - same for wicks. The burn is just their friendly reminder that you won't run dry for a couple of days. I didn't know it until recently that Case Knives bought out Zippo (or maybe the other way around). I expect a Case knife burn any day now.

Amazon for flints and wicks.

In the service I had a Zippo, with extra flint under the inside felt and always pushed the felt
with my finger to make sure it was not over filled.

Matches are hard to come by today, so I have a Bic in the trunk of the car
and in the house, incase I might need some "Fire" for some odd reason.

I do use a "Fire stick" for the charcoal and pellet stoves, though.

Zippo's are great in the wind, though, vs a Bic.

I’ve still got one my son gave me 20? years ago. I think it was a Harley Davidson, but the decal is long gone. I keep a bic handy which gives my cardiologist her own heart problems lol

“Are you still doing that!? Why!?”

Used to use a Zippo. It worked even at 30 below...Bics...not so much...And Zippo lighter fluid burn..oh yeah...jonee handwarmers too. Still have an OLD one I still use. Zippos?? not in 27 years. But I do have a few as well as ash trays... Collectible these days

I have suffered the pain of the overfilled Zippo.........long ago.

I don't smoke (anymore) but I have a couple of Zippos plus fluid plus flints somewhere in my survival gear.

And I have great memories of lighting up in bars all over Japan in my Navy days.

:)

I only smoke occasional cigar. I have an old ( really new retro ) brass zippo that I keep in my truck. And I have a small chrome zippo that has DAD engraved on it that I bought my dad about 35 yrs ago. When he passed my mom gave it to me. The last 7 yrs or so I’ve discovered the wonders of Zippo hand warmers. Great for ice fishing , sporting events and surprisingly they don’t stink enough to spook deer…….. I also have an old original trench lighter that runs on Zippo fluid. It’s marked from the British occupation of Japan.

My dad said he carried a Zippo in WW2, he would tie a string to it and dip in the gas tank of his Jeep to fill it. When I smoked cigarettes I carried a Zippo, suffered from Zippo leg many times. I quit smoking cigarettes 35 years ago but I still have my Zippo, it's been sitting in the top drawer of my dresser ever since I retired it.

Zippo

I don't smoke but I still have my Vietnam Zippo with the saying on the side " Ho Chi Min Is a Communist xxxxxx xxxxxx". I also have the one with the Vietnamese Doung soldered to the side (That is Vietnamese Money). I have a great grandson that spent some time in Iraq that has been pestering me to give them to him so he can put them in his collection.

When in junior/senior high, Ya just weren't cool enough unless you had the finger snap open and snap finger light. Have several stashed some where along with Top rolling machine and ashtray my grandmother gave me in hs

I used them when I was a cigarette smoker. I quit the Zippos long before I quit the cigarettes....I stopped using them after I had one (lit) slip out of my fingers and land under the seat of the car while on the highway.

Are you referring to the double stroke lighting move? Across the thigh, Down stroke opens the cover, up stroke lights it. Always a cool move.

I believe he is referring to the pain of lighter fluid burning your leg when the fluid expands from body heat and comes out of an overfilled Zippo lighter. Been there - not fun!
