I haven't had conventional TV for something like 15 years, no cable or dish. Since the internet service in my area doesn't do well with streaming, most of what I watch for entertainment comes off Netflix DVD's.
There are shows that interest me. One of the interesting trends has been that, while the bulk of everyday programming seems to have degraded to basically unwatchable "reality" shows or comedy at the IQ level of amoebas, some shows have emerged especially on cable channels that surpass even movies in quality of writing, acting, and production.
Since "24" and "Homeland" set the standard, I have not seen a terrorism-themed movie that managed to squeeze a satisfying plot and decent acting into 2 hours. I know this is sacrilege in the eyes of many, but since "Boardwalk Empire", the "Godfather" movies don't do that much for me any more as far as classic gangster stories are concerned. And I'll even admit that "Game of Thrones" managed to do what "Lord of the Rings" (to the dismay of some of my nerdy friends) never did, getting me hooked on an adult fairy tale with swords and dragons (and boobs

).
And there are even some rays of light on broadcast TV. "Sherlock" on PBS, and "Aquarius" on NBC were quite interesting (the latter of course watched on DVD without commercials).
So if you do your homework, you won't run out of interesting stuff to watch, without anesthetizing your brain with the daily drivel.
