One of our members had one of these at the club last week. I had a chance to handle it and thought it felt pretty good. I saw one for a good price online last night from a private seller so i snapped it up. There are a fair number of these right now being sold by dealers as Israeli surplus.

It (and others offered around here) are referred to as Beretta 71's. I did a bit of internet research and what i found suggested that the 71 was a 3.5" barrel and the 6" were either model 73,74 or 75 (depending partly on whether they had fixed sights or adjustable and some frame size differences). Can anyone shed some light on this?

I had a 70S in .380 way back. It was a handy, reliable steel frame SA version. Wish I didn't sell it. No experience with the .22 but Beretta quality is very good. Joe

Mine was marked as a 71, however, I owned a two barrel set that had a different model, maybe 75/76. Cool guns, I had two 70 .32 a.c.p.'s too.

I've just done a little more research and think that maybe mine is a 72. The 72 was basically a 71 sold with 2 barrels (3.5 and 6"). i wonder if these surplus guns were sold with only the target barrel. They'd have to be sold that way here anyway as anything under 106mm (4.17") is prohibited.

The 73 and 74 look to have target sights with the rear sight mounted farther forward on the barrel and a larger grip.

Your gun has the thumb safety, where my three had the cross bolt type safety. Your gun is a newer version than mine were. Go to the Beretta forum and post a WTB ad for a short barrel.

Two of mine were rough cosmetically, but worked like Singer sewing machines. $25.00 plus tax for the pair.

The "AL" code on the slide indicates 1983 I believe.

I'd love to put a 3.5" barrel on it but as I'm located in Canada that could land me in jail for possession of a prohibited firearm!:(
