I have always had a a bit of a crush on Berettas, and since I am in the market for a double action pistol (striked fired polymers are boring me), I figured I would give the 92 series a look. I noticed that the 92FS now has an angled dust cover and a slightly different backstrap than the older models. Beretta also offers an M9 model that seems to be more true to the orignal design. I would prefer the older 80s & 90s style 92. Does anybody know if the M9 is the only way to get an old school style Beretta or is it not quite the same as the 92FS?

I used to have an M9; aside from the frame stampings (M9 vs. 92FS, military style inventory/stock number on the right forward receiver) I think it was identical to a standard 92FS. Of course there are plenty of used ones of both types on the market.

They are big and relatively heavy for a modern 9 mm with the alloy metal frame, smooth slide action and easy to shoot. Long DA trigger reach. Good luck in your search.

I have to agree with you about the older 92FS model. I have one and it is the smoothest simi auto I have in my safe. I have always said "if I had to go into battle with one handgun of my choice it would be the 92FS". Of course I don't own them all but I am talking about the ones I do have.

Except for a few very minor (to me) details, they're the same gun. From Beretta:

I have way too many 9mm's. The Browning High Power is my favorite, but if I could only keep one, it would be the Beretta FS. I have fairly large hands, so the grip doesn't bother me, and I'm not going to conceal any semiauto, that's what S&W 642's are for. :)

You can hear more internet male bovine fertilizer about the Beretta than any other firearm I can think of at the moment. See if you can try one. If you do buy one, try not to modify it to death.

There are some good links in the first post of this thread from the Beretta Forum:

I have a 92FS and like Others have said, they are pretty much a twin for the M9. The 92 is a large pistol, compared to the polymer pistols on today's market, it has an old school feel, not as old as a 1911, but definitely the 80's and 90's. Mine shoots very well, I bought in new in about 2006.

As others have said, it is a large handgun, slide is the smoothest of any gun I own and recoil is minimum due to weight. A fellow shooter owns the M9, I really can't tell any difference, both are very good shooters. Very dependable, I have put several thousand rounds through mine and it has never missed a lick. Good luck to you.

I'm a Beretta accumulator........since my first in 1988 a F Compact......................

If you get a chance hold a "newer" 92 with the radius-ed backstrap before you chose..... a small change that is a big improvement in the grip and feel IMO!!!!!

The M-9 is the "military version" built to the original 80s "mil-specs" that have never changed or been updated.

IMHO if you can find one check out the "Centurion"..... full size frame mated with a Compact (4.2") slide. Also Mec-gar makes some great flush fit 17,18 rd mags and extended 20 round mags for the 92....9mm........ there are also factory 30 rd mags (for the CX4 Carbine) that work... but are a bit much IMO

Beretta also has a factory "G" conversion kit that recently came out that I put on my M9 and one of my 92F's. Since I have a factory G Elite II this is my favorite style (decock only, safety is spring loaded to return to fire position after you decock it).
Any of them a $5 factory "D" main spring is a modification that is hard to justify not doing. It is the factory mainspring for the double action only that lightens the DA trigger pull but is still 100% reliable ignition.

The angle versus straight dust cover you really have to look hard and it isn't much of a difference. The different radius on the backstrap is an improvement in feel for many folks.

Like others have noted, the M9 and the 92FS should be the same gun minus the markings. I love my 92FS, have shot it a few thousand times and it's never skipped a beat. It's very accurate as well.

I've been looking for one, but I'm only really interested in an early one (frame mounted safety/heel mag release).

What I'm REALLY looking for is a 1951. There was one for sale recently for around 500 CAD, kicking myself for passing on it.

You talking about one of these? Beretta 92S
If so, you can get a used surplus one online for about $300

In my opinion, the 92FS / M9 is one of the most reliable auto pistols ever made. Massad Ayoob, in one of his books, announced that when his daughters came of age, they each were gifted from him a Beretta 92FS. An endorsement of that kind, from a gun writer of that caliber, means something.

I've had several over the years, and every one of them were perfect performers. I believe in the US Army tests, the average Beretta M9 went ~13,000 rounds before a single stoppage of any kind.

Feed them good magazines, and you can't go wrong.

I had a 92FS with the straight dust cover. It was a police special that came with 3 magazines. I bought it NIB about two years ago, so if you look around you can find the older models still new.

I wish I liked them. The feel good in had, balance well, great grip, ...really.... Overall I like the gun. That is until I pull the trigger. It's heavy and slow. I think it's rated at 10# but I swear the trigger feels heavier. It feels heavier than Sig, which is also rated at 10#.

I keep wanting to buy one but I can shoot Glocks twice as fast and twice as accurate (due to trigger pull).

Have you tried one with the D main spring?

All I've ever tried were factory guns. Don't know what they had in them

It is a big improvement from the standard mainspring in a DA/SA model (M9 / FS / G)

The D spring is the mainspring from the DAO guns or the "DS" models. It is still reliable ignition but lightens the DA pull by 2 to 3 lbs and the SA pull slightly. It brings the DA to 8 to 9 lbs and smooth. Only costs around $5 and you only need to push out one pin to replace it.

Totally different gun. He is talking about the 1951.

The D spring makes a big difference. It lightens the DA pull and improves the guns shoot-ability without resulting in light strikes.

I've had several, including an Italian INOX. They are my favorite gun, bar none. Slide feels like it's rolling on greased all bearings. Too big? Give me a break! It's a full size duty gun.

Is a striker fired lighter? A bit. Can you launch bullets as fast with a Beretta? Yes! Single action trigger is very light. Comparing a Glock or any other polymer striker fired weapon is foolish. The 92fs and a Glock aren't even in the same league. The Glock is the Toyota of the gun world. The Beretta the Ferrari. Both will get you where you're going, but one with much more style.
