The best we can figure is it was made around 1992 for the Rhode Island State Police. It is marked as such on the slide RISP. I don't really care for DAO only but I do like police marked guns. There is a little wear on the back of the grip and around the trigger guard and on top of the slide. Other than that it is in very good condition. Whoever used it obviously took good care of it. We fired three mags with three different kinds of ammo with it yesterday with no problems. I bought it because it was there for a decent price. Now, what am I going to do with it?

That's pretty cool. We're sure it doesn't stand for Rikers Island State Prison? 'Course, that may be a federal house up there. What does it look like, besides the little wear around the grip & trigger guard? Also, are there any more available? I only have 3 Berettas; all 3 being police/prison guard trade-ins, all 3 shoot great, all have new grip handles, and I have no .40 caliber pistols. I suppose I could look up Beretta 96 to see what one looks like.

I suggest you buy a couple of boxes of "boutique" ammo such as this hard cast Underwood stuff or similar Buffalo Bore or Double Tap and keep it handy for bears.

I bought one a few years ago from a local police supply store. It was listed as a Maryland state police gun for $285. At that price I said why not?
It has a very smooth trigger but a very long pull. I had to re-learn shooting it. Just pull that trigger straight back non stop until it fires. It makes you concentrate on those sights!
And for jeffrefrig, it looks like a chubby 92.

Nice try...Rikers is a city jail though!

Definitely Rhode Island state police. They had a thing for DAO's and used Sig DAK's for years. I remember reading an article in the gun rags years ago about those.

Well, the first thing you gotta do is post some pics of it here...

After that, you should take it out to the range, see how it shoots...

Then you post a Range Report here! :D

Any more questions?

Well, we took it out to my little pistol range and shot it. It ate everything we fed it. As mentioned above, it does have a long trigger pull. It was OK, but not as accurate as some of my other stuff, but I guess in a fight it would probably do.

PSP issued the 96 in NP3 finish, it was their first foray into semi-auto duty weapons. They followed with the Brigadier model before transitioning to Glocks in .45GAP. PD guns are highly collectible, especially state issued and marked. If that is a truly a Rhode Island State Police issue I would think it would be very desireable, RISP only has a little over 200 Troopers, so not many weapons to surplus.

Post up some pictures.

Being a very small state size wise I didn't think they would have a lot of troopers. Thanks for the info. Mississippi has slots for around 500 troopers, but like most other states they are short handed by about 100. Some Mississippi HP weapons are marked, others not.

Beretta 96

Congrats on your Beretta 96. It's a fine weapon in my opinion. It was my issued duty weapon for several years up until my retirement in 2008.

The Beretta 96F was one of my brother's duty weapons. His first was a S&W 19-3. He passed away 12/26/2021. I will be aquiring these in 2 months. They have great sentimental value to me.

I had only just loaded this magazine cover into a different thread; RISP and Sig DAK's.

Enjoy it Mine shoots well, but it is buried in the safe presently. Be Safe,

I have a 92 DAO Centurion, and a 96 DAO Centurion...both reliable, accurate, well-made pistols.

I love Beretta's DAO design; it's got the feel and travel of a double-action revolver trigger, which makes the lack of a manual safety a lot less risky than some striker-fired designs, in my opinion.

Congratulations on your acquisition, Charlie. :)
