BEST AUTO PISTOLS YOU OWNED

It's not necessarily my favorite semi-auto. It's not necessarily the prettiest semi-auto I own. It's certainly not the most expensive semi-auto I own.

But the BEST semi-auto I own is my Gen III Glock 23. After thousands of rounds it has proved to be 100% reliable, plenty accurate, and conveniant to carry.

Colt 1991A1, plain jane, matt finish, plastic trigger, cheap stocks, and it shoots better than any other .45 caliber pistol I currently own.

Close second is a Rock Island in 38 Super.

These two shoot as wells as or better than most of the more expensive toys.

Taurus PT140. Feels great in the hand, great performance, accurate and reliable. I used to say my CZ75 was better, I have finally come to terms with it lol.

My 40 caliber Sig P239. In over 3000 rounds sent downrange the only failure has been one single round of Federal Champion that failed to fire. In addition to being reliable, the accuracy is superb, it points pefectly in my hand, and it's very easy to conceal. IMO it's the finest Combat Pistol on the planet, however I will admit to being a bit biased.

All my 1911s have been good; I avoid "improving" them other than good fixed sights and decent triggers. The BHP's triggers aren't as good--but good enough and they run beautifully.

I've dabbled with SIGs and Glocks and the odd Ruger. No joy. Did buy a Sigma 9mm a while back that I shoot pretty well. It's a bit fussy with my hand loads the BHPs love, but does very well with factory ammo. I'm still a bit on the fence with it but it's a likable cuss.

Nowadays there are so many on the market (like cars) I can't tell one from another any more anyhow.

Best would be the SIG 226 I had. Wish I still had it. Runner up would be any of the Glocks I owned. Had a Gen3 S&W 3913 9mm that you couldn't jam if you wanted to. Worst I had was a Colt Series 80 45acp. Sloppy, crude ****! Not like the old ones. Don't miss that gun!

For 35 years I was a Revolver Guy when it came to "Serious Guns". Never was much for the 9mm round either. When I carried an autopistol it was a WG SiG220 or a G-22, but usually a 3" 65 or a 640-1 Centennial Magnum found it's way onto my belt.

But I kept hearing good reports from pals of mine in the Texas DPS and ICE concerning the Speer 124+P Gold Dot. Then my pal and long-time fellow forumite "Shortranger" put up snapshots of this gun....

We made a trade and as luck would have it, it loves the Speer load. I've been carrying it daily since 2009. I no longer rotate guns based upon the clothing of the day as this gun works with everything but a beach towel... :)

Glock 20
I put an aftermarket trigger, slide release, sights, barrel, guide rod and recoil spring in. It shoots flat, holds into 8" @ 100yds, 16rd mag capacity and is light enough it doesn't pull down my pants.
I've had 1911's, still have a Para and a Kimber. Never could get 100% behind cocked an locked carry.

I like my SW40VE now that it's well broken in and the trigger pull is under 5 lbs finally. I'm approaching 1500 rounds through it trouble-free, hopefully shooting this afternoon if the storms hold off. Got a brand spankin new Ruger P95 to break in along with a couple other new semi's.

SIG 229 SAS w/ DAK trigger (SAS is the anti-snag melt-down job from Sig's Custom Shop & DAK is a really smooth DAO at about 6 1/2 lbs)...I have the .40 S&W barrel it came with plus a .357 Sig barrel I got off the factory's web-site...the front sight has a night sight insert...mine is one of the first generation of these from 2006 that came w/ custom wood grips...

almost a tie w/ my OD green Glock 17 w/ a ridiculous number of mags (w/ 17, 19 & 33 rnds)...

I too admire (and own) a good Colt 1911A1, Combat Commander and Browning Hi-Power...we still had the .45's when I was an MP...but I really fell for the Glock 17 for 9mm in the 90's (after about 6 or 7 years of snickering about plastic guns and thinking "how ugly they look"), likewise I fell for the Sig P229 format back in the 90's when it was originally designed exclusively for the heavier hitting .40/.357 loads (w/ 12 rd mags)...

for me, handgun designs end w/ these two models...I see no point in ever looking beyond them, just like some of the fellas here feel about the 1911 & Hi-Power...

I alway's disliked the stock factory grips on the SIG 228, does anyone craft a good quality walnut stock for them?

Don't know about wood- I put a Pachmeyer grip sleeve on mine and I'm perfectly happy with it.

Then again, I have grip sleeves on both my Glocks and the CS has rubber grips so I'm used to the feel.

Best Semi-auto pistol I've owned

Smith and Wesson Model 39.

I've tried 1911s, Hi-Powers, Glocks, CZ 75, Model 59 and 3906, let's see what else do I remember? Oh yes Smith 908, 910 and 915. Oh yeah, a Sig 226.

I liked the Hi-Power and the CZ 75 pretty much, 1911s are okay but real heavy.

Comes down to it, the 39 is the one auto I can shoot half way decent and it's the only one I still own.

I bet they could sell a few if they brought this back in their Classic series.

Here's three really good ones; Ed Brown Commander length, a Wilson CQB 5" gun and my old Hi-Power that NOVAK reworked. The two 1911's are probably at 4K rds so far with nary a hiccup.

Have to add that the pair of SIG 229's and the 5903 that I carried for many years on the Hwy Patrol NEVER let me down either.

Lots of good auto's out there.

Not the finest or prettiest but from a gunfighting point of view I trust my Glocks. Out of the box ready to go.
