Best grip for J frame draw

I tried several different stocks on my 640-1 .357 and ended up keeping these smooth combats on it.

They work well with my holster.

My 940 came with Uncle Mikes, but I like getting 3 fingers on so switched to Hogues. They do make the gun more bulky and less pocketable- I may switch them back.

It's the usual concealability/shooting ease dichotomy.

As with most things concerning self defense there are trade offs involved.
For what it's worth, here's my 2 cents worth:

First, where you carry has a lot to do with speed of presentation. I believe
that an open top holster just behind strong side hip is best location for a
quick presentation.

I know it's controversial, but I also believe the open trigger guard aids
in getting off a quick first shot. The old Chic Gaylord speed scabbard
shown below on the left is a good example.

A hammer is superfluous for getting off a quick first shot. I prefer the
concealed hammer on my 642-1 shown below.

Rubber grips are a little bit sticky, so I believe they are a bit slower than
slicker grips like the Hogue Blue Lavas. Both shown on 642 below. 2nd
and 3rd from left. The standard wood round butt you mentioned would
be just as good as my Hogues.

After you have decided on where (on your body) you will carry, what gun
you will carry, and what holster you will carry it in, next comes a lot of
practice. When I was training students I always suggested at least a
thousand practice presentations. And practice is another subject that
requires a lot more explanation.

Here's another "It depends on your individual hands" answer.

For me, I've never found anything that points as well and as quickly and absorbs recoil so well as the funny looking Ergo Grip Delta Grip.

I know they're hideous, but they point just right for me (oddly, in my wife's much smaller hands as well) and the gun does not move in my grip at all during shooting, even with serious loads.

List is around $27, but you can find them for under $16 online.

I pocket carry a 649-2 and it has Crimson trace laser grips. Very fast to get on target and smooth to the draw. For my once in a while pocket carry model 34-1 I stayed with the original wood stocks enhanced by a BK adapter. This works well also but for any serious business I want my 38 cal. with the laser.

I carry a 640 pro series with Hogue extreme G10 grips in a Galco horse hide pocket holster. I have lighter J frames, but this is my current favorite due to the improved sight picture provided bu the 3 dot high visibility sights and the ability to shoot .357 magnums if desired. My normal carry load is a .38+P 158 grain jacketed lead flat point.

My model 60 (.38) is wearing VZ G 10 boot grips they call a 320. No texturing or checkering but they have a very grippy feel but aren't sticky. They are small and concealable. They offer no cush, if that an issue for you. I'm quite fond of them and like them better than the original wood or the Packs they wore previously. I recommend them of course the bottom line is use whatever works for you. One size or style doesn't work for all.

"I believe I read an article on the snubtraining web site suggesting the standard wood round butt grip on old time J frames was one of the best"

I agree, the wood grips and Tyler T fit my hand perfect and offer a smooth friction free draw.

I'm really liking the wood RB on the M49 I have. I'd like to get a set for the M442 I also have. There is also a M43c in the works. Will these stocks fit the newer DAO J-frames? Sorry for the newb question, just not familiar with the J frames. Not the newer ones anyway.

Thanks

Lord save us from big, fat, rubber grips like Hogue produces. I'm with BigBoku on this one and prefer the slimness of the old wooden ones, supplemented by a Tyler T grip.

DOH!!

Had a question about the older wood RB's fitting the newer DAO's.

Your's and BigBoku's pics answered the question perfectly.

Thanks

The answer is It Depends, on multiple variables .

Hand size is critical , in two different contexts . The efficacy of your grasp for shooting is the obvious . The other is being able to remove the gun from your pocket while gripped .

I have gorilla sized hands , and removing it while gripped is always a struggle . To the point I choose not to pocket carry a J .

Since my ( square butt) M36 rides usually in a pancake holster , it wears Pachymer Grippers .

But that's me , people with normal sized hands will very probably have different milage . For y'all , look at whichever flavor of Boot Grip that suits you .

I use Pachmayr Compacs on my pocket-carried EDC. They give a quick, secure grip with purchase for the little finger, and a high hold for reduced muzzle flip and a faster second shot. Recoil absorption is excellent. They are larger and bulkier than magnas, but I have no trouble concealing the gun in any pockets I wear.
I'm with 'Zagged on the Pachmayr Compacs. I clearanced mine for speedloaders.

'Cept I don't usually pocket carry.

I really like plain factory magma style stocks. That being said I have houge tamer on my 640. 38s not bad. 357 heavy recoil. I carry it with 4 38 plus p and a single 357 for last shot just in case. It's all about personal preference.

Is tried them all. Crimson trace 405's. Fit my hand the best. Aren't too sticky. Have a pad over the back strap for shooting .357's. The laser is a bonus.

For pocket carry a shrouded hammer is far more important to me than the grip.
