Best M&P 15 model for first AR?

Thanks for the insights, Kadonny -- I'll take a look. I'm wanting the bottom ⅓ co-witness setup as you describe.

Was just looking at the LaRue site...their LT129 and Aimpoint Pro combo is $571.95 to the door. That's a lot of coin.

That's way too much for a Pro. They can be found with the Aompoint mount which is great for less than $400.

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago. I decided on the Sport and got it for $555 delivered from PSA. I figured I would spend the $300 that I saved to stock up on ammo. Have only shot it once so far but it seems like a pretty nice rifle. I did have a couple strangers come up to me at the range and ask me about my Sport. People seem to be interested in the Sport.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I will probably be picking up the Sport in the near future.

What about after the initial purchase and you start adding on the options later? ACOG 4x, Geisel trigger group, Advanced armament suppressor on an M4 Platform dressed out with a Flash Kill to hide the
optics in daylight. Next a thermal weapons sight?

^ Who are you? Interesting 1st post. Welcome aboard!

Yup. The 15-Sport will accept any AR-15 furnigure and modifications with the exception of the trigger guard, and dust cover. Keep it simple or go tacti-cool.

The LaRue LT129 cantilevered, quick release mount is what adds the $$$. I saw the Aimpoint Pro at Western Sport for $399...but I'm looking for lower ⅓ co-witness, which requires a non-standard mount. LT150 mount gives me 1/3 as well for a few bucks less. The combo at LaRue (Pro plus their mount) is cheaper than buying the $399 red dot and their mount separately.

That said, I'm really looking closely at The Primary Arms offerings. Their "clone" looks pretty good, and they offer a lower ⅓ co-witness cantilevered mount for a LOT less.

Decisions, decisions.

LaRue is top shelf... I bought my H1 from LaRue with their LT660 mount. That said, it's my understanding that the Pro mount from Aimpoint has a height between absolute and Lower 1/3 co-witness. Have you had a chance to use one?

Lots of guys like the Pro but my guess is that the purchse is usually dictated by the sub $400 price tag. Great optic and great price. But if you're considering spending close to $600 on a Pro suggest taking a look at the H1.

I've got a couple PA MicroDots. They have given years of great service on .22s. Lots of guys have them on ARs too and post good reports.

Decions decisions... If ya got the coin you'll not regret buying Aimpoint.

I was planning on building another caliber than 5.56 for my next ar. But that is a pretty great deal that has me wanting to jump on it.

Man, it's a great time to buy an AR right now. Lots of value for the $ out there from lots of good companies.

It's also a good time to peruse the used rifle racks. Lots of people bought multiple AR-15's as "investments" during the panic thinking that "assault rifles" would be banned driving up the price of legal "pre-ban" AR-15's. That never materialized and now those "investments" are getting dumped.

I'm still kicking myself in the butt. I sold my 15-22 for a pretty penny during the panic. I had a ridiculous panic offer for my 15-Sport and I stupidly didn't take it. I could have bought an IWI Tavor and another Sport with the money.

I got a stupid offer for my first 1:8 5R sport during the panic. I sold it, bought an old Browning Auto 5 I've always wanted that's in great shape, and socked away the rest.

I can only imagine the guy who willingly forked over 3 times what a sport goes for now is probably kicking himself.

Don't feel bad no matter what you did. Keep in mind there are lots of guys with a $2,000 Del-Ton in their gun safes. :D

Isn't that the truth! AR-15's were flying off the shelves. Folks were paying ridiculous money for Carbon-15's and DPMS Sportical's; composite polymer lower, true featureless slick-side uppers. There was a run on AR-15 lowers (stripped or built), complete upper receivers, and AR-15 build parts.

I had a pair of sequential serial numbered Delaware Machinery stripped lower receivers. Nothing special to the lowers in construction or name brand. I paid $60 each for them. In the panic, they might as well have been made of platinum. :D

Just think, you can buy the lesser known stripped lowers for under $50 now. The market has caught up. The panic buying prices people paid on gunbroker for stripped lowers was insane.

Polymer lowers are down to $35.

They changed the price, the $850 is gone now. So was it a mistake? Should have jumped on it while I had the chance. Oh well, do we really need another AR?

Reference Post #39. A 9x19 in an AR carbine is a whole 'nuther animal than it is in a 5-inch barrel pistol. I most certainly would not compare the 9 against the 5.56 as a long range gun, but one usually doesn't need a weapon that will shoot bull's-eyes out to 300-plus yards except for range-work and bragging rights. At 30-40 yards, mine will penetrate a 1-1/2 inch pack of paper forms and bury itself 2 inches deep into a red oak timber back-stop. The pistol caliber uppers and complete rifles are showing-up more often. You can get a drop-in upper in 9, 45, 40, 308 (Russian), 300 black-out, 6.8, 22lr....and more I can't think of at the moment and some of them will simply drop right on your existing lower with no necessary modifications at all. I never thought much about the pistol calibers until this 9-mil fell in my lap. I find myself shooting it a lot more than the 5.56. I reload and cast my own bullets. At about a nickel-a-round for 9x19....no economic contest. I rarely shoot 22 anymore. At todays cost/shortage of 22, I can shoot 9-mil much cheaper.

If you have a 5.56/2.23 at the moment and are looking for another caliber....a pistol caliber is not a bad choice and has it's place and all you will need is the upper and some magazines. Cheaper ammo, fewer moving parts and no gas system to fool with.

This thread has been helpful. I've ordered a Sport for my first AR. The Colt was tempting at $850 but I couldn't really justify the extra $300 for a starter rifle. Looking forward to getting into this new area of shooting. I also joined a local gun club that has pistol and rifle competitions--seems like a good place to learn by watching and participating (it didn't hurt that they have an FFL in my neighborhood that charges only $10 for members).

You'll be happy with your purchase! Great rifle for the money, the best budget rifle imo.

A side note about the sport, had taken mine to a respected gunsmith for some work to be done (don't have the space or tools to do by myself), and he kept saying "huh" after he would remove a part. I finally asked him if there was something I should be concerned about, he said "no, I just like to see how the build was put together and this rifle was built correctly" he had no idea it was a sport at the time of his response. Then asked if it was a spikes or a smith and wesson as he drove out the FSB tapper pins. I guess he see's a lot of do it yourself guys with some funky builds, made me feel good about my rifle, and confident in s&w m&p 15 builds.
