I am looking to pick up some of the better European Spaghetti Westerns. So if you have a favorite non-Eastwood Spaghetti Western let's hear about it or them.

One I saw as a kid in '68 was The Mercenary, about a European guy in Mexico during the revolution. Even as a kid I liked the cross draw Astra autoloader he carried. and in one scene a nickel S&W D.A. .44 Break top is used in extreme close ups. There was another western where a guy used a four barreled sawed off shotgun but I cant remember the name. Here's the entire Mercenary film on You Tube in sections...

My wife and I watched "Once Upon A Time In The West" just the other night, at the suggestion of others here on the Forum in another thread. Neither of us had seen it before.

At 3 hours or so, it seemed too long by about 1/3, with lots of almost interminable close-up face shots (though I wasn't complaining of the ones of Claudia Cardinale!) and a storyline that dragged in places.

Still, with Charles Bronson as the Eastwood-like character Harmonica, and Jason Robards playing Cheyenne, a criminal with a good heart, and Henry Fonda cast as the truly despicable cold-blooded killer Frank, it's hard to argue with this Western as one of the classics. Personally, I prefer the Eastwood movies, but this one is pretty darn good too. I give it an 8 on the one-to-ten scale.

The Great Silence - hero is mute and carries a broomhandle. The ending is surprising.

Gotta be Once Upon a Time in the West. Not only one of -- if not the -- best spaghetti Westerns, but one of the best films ever made.

Bronson's role was intended for Eastwood, by the way, but by then Eastwood had become enough of a film star in the U.S. (based on the previous spaghetti Westerns) that he declined to focus on Hollywood products.

Silverado
Blazing Saddles

A little bit for everyone in the two of them....

Once Upon a Time in the West is not only the best spaghetti western, it's likely the best western ever made. I know that covers a lot of territory, but it has an incredibly well written plot, character development, and acting. It's also part mystery as the first time you see it, it takes a good part of the film before the story line comes together.

Great movie.

Django. Before the modern made one. He pulled a Gatling in a coffin.
They broke his fingers but manage to fire his Colt on the cross off a gravestone. (Boy this is really an old movie)

I've watched a lot of westerns, I was more impressed by "Once Upon a Time in the West" than any of the spaghetti westerns excepting "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly".

It slowly builds to the final scene. Stay focused, hit pause for breaks.... It will all come together. I did not watch it for years thinking what, a spaghetti with out Clint, and ended up being pleasantly surprised after watching it.

Well...I hate to beat a dead horse, but..."Once Upon A Time In The West" was what crossed my mind as soon as I read the thread title.

I also thought of the Trinity series as the best comedy spaghetti westerns. I love "Silverado" and "Blazing Saddles", but I don't believe I'd call either of them spaghetti westerns.

Not exactly spaghetti but I love "The Quick and The Dead" with Gene Hackman and Sharon Stone.
