My niece attends Temple University in North Philadelphia and has to travel through some nasty areas to get to class, home, job etc.. She is only 19 and cannot get a PA CCW til she is 21. What is a good brand of pepper spay/mace for her to carry in lieu of the CCW she can't get for another 2 years!

Thanks in advance,

Check out defensedevices.com Pepper Spray Stun Guns Police Fox Labs Tasers Alarms[/url] they have a Sabre 2 ounce stream cop top. Same one we use in the LASD. Avoid the keychain models...they suck. She just has to lean to carry it in her purse where it is readily accessible....and teach her to have her hand in it walking at night.

I have thought about the Kimber Pepper blaster myself.

Particularly useful in no-carry zones or when one may enjoy an adult beverage.

Besides my EDC I carry a 4 oz. can of FOX 5.3 pepper spray (cone pattern, safety flip top) in the truck along with a few packs of Sudecon decontamination wipes. I also keep a couple of the FOX 5.3 2 oz. grenades in the night stand along with another FOX 5.3 4 oz. can.

Having been "Collaterally Damaged" when local LEO was spraying "Thugly" I can tell you from personal experience that this stuff WORKS.

I bought this "hotpink" at Midway. It was on sale for ten dollar something...

Give her a spray, knife as well as a baton for inside the car/appartment. Idon't know the law regarding a taser tho.

NY State allows civilians to have a 2 ounce maximum spray. And that is what I carry.

The "cigarette lighter" versions only spray about 5 feet. That is not enough buffer. The 2 ounce (police style) versions will spray 12 feet. Only buy a version that also offers a "practice" offering (shoots inert material). Your neice needs to practice so that she can hit what she is aiming at. It is not difficult as you can adjust your aim as you shoot. You have about 15 seconds worth with a 2 ounce sprayer. The Kimber unit gives you just two shots and no possibility of adjusting your aim. In theory 15 seconds is enough to incapacitate 7 felons.

The same size canister that holds 2 ounces will also hold 4 ounces, so get the biggest capacity legal. And buy the practice canister.

They are now selling a gel version that you cannot easily wipe from your eyes. Try to locate one of those. Instruct your neice to aim for the eyes. If they are wearing glasses aim for the forehead and let it drip into the eyes.

I gave a practice and actual pepper sprayer to my neice. My sister-in-law is a lawyer and told my niece not to be shy about using it. If someone seems to be following you, take the sprayer out of your purse and be ready. If you are convinced they are following you, no warning, just spray and run. She said any decent lawyer would see to it that she would not get in trouble for that action.

If they do not offer a practice sprayer then it is not a police style sprayer. Only buy the ones that offer the practice sprayer. Replace the practice sprayer and the actual sprayer every three years even if it has not been used.

Check the nozzle of the sprayer every few days. Sometimes a small amount will leak out and clog the nozzle. Run the sprayer under warm water until it looks clear.

Every 6 months give it a test spray (1/2 second is enough to see if it still has the 12 foot range). Then run the nozzle under warm water to keep it clear.

My niece is a school teacher. It is legal to carry the sprayer, but it is a violation of school rules to carry it into the classroom. So your neice will need to see what the university rules are too.

Buying a sprayer is a good idea in my opinion. Not every situation requires a bullet to the head. The sprayers are effective on men (less so on druggies), and very effective on viscious dogs and coyotes (a problem in the East lately). I think it is a fine thing to do for your neice. I did it for mine and I feel better for that.

Wasp Spray, whatdaya get? About 15 feet of insecticide foam in your face? It's cheaper. Just gotta find a little can that packs a punch I guess otherwise the stuff from Cold Steel is pretty good. Cold Steel Knives : The Ultimate Knife and Blade Company

Kimber Pepper Blaster--it comes out at 90mph, saturates better than spray as it turns to foam and does not lose potency/power like an aerosol. 13 ft range.

Dont know much on the different pepper sprays but I have heard that the spray used on Bears would be a good choice, however Im not sure how compact of size its available in.

I agree with the Kimber Pepper Blaster, You can get them in two models. FYI, be sure it contains at least 100,000 SHU (Scovil heat units) for minimum agent. Anything less that is not enough. For more info, try loging in on Kimber's web site for further details.

I disagree. I think the Kimber product is a poor choice. You need to make a direct hit in the face of the subject to be effective. A miss is as good as saying "take me". You only have two shots. It requires skill and there is no real way to practice enough to get that skill.

On the otherhand, the sprayers will spray 12 to 15 feet. They will allow a continuous spray of 15 to 30 seconds (depending upon the size of the canister). Two seconds in the face is supposed to be debilitating. You can adjust your aim on the fly. The skill level is much lower.

Plus, LEOs don't use the Kimber product, they use sprays.

The gel sprays seem promising. I am waiting for some field reports before replacing my neice's sprayer (mine too).

If your state allows the 4 ounce size, then get that. New York only allows the 2 ounce size (same cannister, different fill levels).

The Kimber unit would be worthless against a dog--they move too fast to get on-aim.

the point of pepper spray is to protect yourself not go hunting. its a simple thing, bad guy comes to you, soak em with the spray and run for help. just my opinion.
