I'll bet that any pepper spray that's effective on humans will work well with dogs.

You will lose,
The Animal Control people in my area said that while anything you spray at a dog including water will make him cringe (for a moment) only a spray that advertises it works on dogs or bears etc... will actually work. I know I sell a lot of Mace brand Muzzle out of my shop, I cannot tell you how it works.

Whatever type you get, make sure it comes in a can whose shape lets you feel which way the nozzle is pointing. Spraying yourself really sucks.

I ahhh errr heard about a guy doing that once.

I spray at least two a month and so far the pepper spray has worked. If it ever doesn't work then I'll spray them with .40 cal. Properly applied, it works every time.

Charlie,

Didn't you describe an encounter where the sprayed dog commenced to plow dirt with his nose and stuck his head in a bucket of water?

UDAP 13.4 ounces of pepper power...it will stop a bear a dog or a person will drop in their tracks...it is carried by almost every hunter in Alaska, the ones that dont carry it always bring along someone who is a slower runner then they are.

I have been around too many canisters that eventually leaked. I actually feel safer with a firearm over anything that would be strong enough to incapacitate a dog. Seals and pressure give out but bullets last a good long time. And there are too many areas where law enforcement thinks mace, tear gas, pepper spray, and whatever is a concealed weapon. Just get a CCW permit and carry a gun of your choosing.

Best spray?

The news last night reported that a local man
shot a pit bull & a Rottweiler while they were attacking
his leashed Rott. Killed the pit & wounded the Rott;
obligatory footage of the dead pit bull's owner crying
& talking about what a good dog it was & " why did
he have to shoot her?" The 2 dogs had attacked the
Rott & his owner before.

I don't have a can of pepper spray. I hope that the can is rated for some pretty high temperatures. As in, summer in your vehicle. We used "canned air" to blow the dirt of computers. As recently as last summer one guy I worked with had a can blow up in his van.

Some months back I picked up a 9mm Sigma "just because". Light, reliable, accurate, compact enough. So far we are proving pretty compatable, and 16 rounds of 9mm on tap would be a comfort.

What we need around here are more predators to thin these mutts out.

Bear Spray

That's what I use on my backstreet hikes here (Utah). I've seen a LOT of dogs running loose in my two years here, and have been charged three times. Twice I used an 'alpha male yell' and an aggressive stance to scare them away -- the third (it grabbed onto one of my boots and started shaking it) required a poke with my (sharpened) walking stick. I do, however carry a full-sized can of bear spray ("2% capsaicin and related capsaicinoids"). Since it shoots out a thick, orange stream of the stuff, I figure that if I'm ever in serious danger I'll use it -- and then immediatly call animal control and/or the sheriff.

For a life-threatening situation -- and the gods help me if that were to ever occur -- I might have to resort to Plan B.

UDAP is the only way to fly even if your carrying your smith, the following are people who had an in your face confrontation

Dont take my word, go and read the dozens upon dozens of people who have used their spray....

as for me, I had a pit 100+lbs come on my property this past summer, he would not leave my dogs alone, he wanted to attack my boys on several occasions... since I am a dog lover rather then feed it a dose of 240gr swc from my 629, when he started to come at me he got a full face of UDAP, he has never come on my property again...bothered my dogs or challenged me....

I always carry a small can of Gunk Carb Cleaner...only had to use it one time, and believe me, an aggressive dog will do backflips when hit with it. Legal? Don't care if I need to defend myself.

Stuff is awsome on cockroaches too.

M1 you have a good memory. Several months ago I bounced up on a porch to knock on the door and after I get up there a female pit won't let me come down. After a good spraying she flops around in the yard rubbing her eyes in the dirt. I am no longer on her mind. As I get back in my car I see her submerge her head in her water bucket. I ain't never seen that before. I was back out there a couple of weeks ago and when she saw me she went under the trailer and didn't say anything or come out. I was ready for her and she knew it. Several years ago I went to a trailer for something I can't remember. I was already on the porch, of which the main feature was a 4X8 sheet of plywood, when I heard a growling dog hitting the plumbing on the way out to get at me. I didn't have any spray with me that time and as the pit started up the steps I drew my seven shot 686 and fired one round in the direction of the dog. As luck would have it it went through her pink nose and out her exterior. Nobody was home. I figured the dog owner would call and complain about someone shooting their dog but they never did.

Kinda like an arse backward Texas heart shot eh???

Thanks for the replies. I do have my pistol with me most all of the time but would like a less than lethal option to deal with the occasional aggressive dog that makes its way near my shop.

While I understand the use of a walking stick, asp, or other impact type weapon I'd rather not have the animal get within striking distance if at all possible. My hand-to-dog fighting skills are not what they once were as a young man. :)

On the other hand, spray has its potential weaknesses as has been pointed out regarding wind and blowback. I have done some training with the foxlab sprays and getting some on you is not fun.

I am seriously considering buying UDAP.

Is the jogger type sufficient to ward off dogs?

Thank you
