I have been looking for ammo for my 357 j frame. I am looking for 38 special +p and I think I am going to try some underwood ammo. I like the barnes type ammo that double tap makes but it seems a little on the expensive side. I want the best penetrating ammo that is in the price range of underwood. What would you recommend off of their site?

Underwood Ammo - 38 Special

I know 38 is no bear stopper, but I am looking for something I could carry as sd in my j frame.

For self defense I'd carry the +P LSWCHP. It just so happens I do carry that load but made by Winchester.

For critters, I'd carry the hard cast Keith SWC +P.

I have told this before, but here goes again. A few ago my good friend Milt won a raffle. The prize was a guided bear hunt. He elected to carry his 357 with Silver Tip ammo. I offered him one of my 44s but he declined. I offered him some of my cast bullet 357 hand loads. He declined. I forgot to mention he was career Army, Ordnance. Ordnance folks don't like it when Air Force folks make firearms recommendations!
The dogs got that bear up a tree. Milt shot it several times before if fell. The Silver Tips mushroomed and barely penetrated the bar. It made a great rug! It was a cimammon red color.
I go cast bullet too.

Never heard of Underwood ammo - let us know how it performs. For SD I like Buffalo Bore #20A 158 grain +P SWCHP-GC which generates 1040 fps from a 2" Chief's Special (REALLY)! A proven round.

Michigan Scott:

I recently did more Chronograph testing (this Fall) and I had to send 6 boxes of the Winchester +P FBI load back to them because they performed no where near where they were supposed to have. I was getting 725 - 740 fps from my 2" M60-7 and the advertised velocity was 890 fps. OK, the 890 fps was supposedly from a 4" barrel, so take 40 or 50 fps off of that. STILL 100 fps slower than it should be. The Remington R38S12 FBI load does an honest 840fps and the BB 1040 both from my 2" Chief's Special. THe Winchester boxes I had (300 rounds worth) were either standard loads that were mis-marked as +P's or their machinery was not throwing the correct powder charge. In any event my point here is I would actually chronograph your Winchester FBI loads for verification before using them for SD purposes or just use another brand. I am NOT indiscriminately bad mouthing Winchester here - I actually think their ammo is pretty good, but they might have had a problem that went undetected.

Was Milt still kicking when they got him out of the bear? :D

Chief,

The case of ammo I have chrono's around 780fps. After trying a half dozen loads, I settled on the WW because the most velocity was from a Federal +P 129gr Hydra-Shok at about 860fps. I decided I'd rather have the weight.

We all must make choices. Buffalo Bore was not around when I did my range work.
