The actual spot that you need to hit in a human brain for instant incapacitation is about the size of a dime. Targets marketed to precision marksmen (aka snipers) in LEO actually feature this. Suppressed 15-22 would work especially at night with NVD, Saiga -12 with 20 rd drum for those close encounter of the "Zombie" kind. And of course my Sigma F 40 and Cold Steel Recon Tanto. As I run out of ammo I will cache the empty weapon(s) for possible later use. I Practice on eggs/golf balls for "stubborn" zombies where, "I" believe that any centerfire rifle will eliminate hostilities with a centered head shot!! Good Hunting!!! Be Safe,

I saw and liked WWZ. But reading through this thread was very eye opening. At the beginning everyone talked about availability of .22lr ammo being a bonus for the 15-22. Those comments clearly before the great panic.

22lr is going to be the least available, as we've seen EVERYBODY want's some! Probably easy to scavenge from vacant houses though. I still think it's probably under powered for zombies. Need center fire.

If the zombies move as fast and if you turn into a zombie as fast as in WWZ, we are all truly doomed - in that case you just need one gun with one bullet.

Well reading this thread......... speaking of Zombies I'm waiting for my two teenager boys to wake up on a long weekend....... LOL

My combo would be my Beretta CX4, 9mm carbine and 2 Beretta 92 Elite IIs...........

my stock of 15,17/18,20 and 30 rd. mags. will work in all three guns. (Note to self: need to get a "possibles bag" aka "Indiana Jones" to carry on left side....bag would hold 10-15 loaded Beretta mags)

I would own everything inside of 50 yds..... maybe 100. Beyond 100 the "Walking Dead" are too slow to be a immediate issue!

Watching the "Walking Dead" the past three seasons...... it always makes me pause when the 110 lb. girl ( every zombie movie/show is required to have at least one hot chick) drives a knife through the top of a zombies skull............. if that's possible then the 15-22 is a winner....backed up with my Ciener Hi-power .22 conversion with 15rd mags! (Ammo note; need more CCI Stingers and Velocitors!!!!)

I would not bet my life on that kind of scenario on a few 9mm firearms and a .22 conversion. You would need a kill range out to at least 200 yards. 9mm is when you are in an urban jungle and all targets are 75 yards and under. And even then I would likely want to have a gun in each hand for short range work. But as a 3-gunner I can easily hit head sized targets out to at least 300 yards, but to be able to hit 100 % I would reduce that to around 200 yards with an AR.
As for a pistol you want something that carried a big mag has a flat shooting hi velocity round, low recoil, and you can carry lots of mags and ammo. 2 pistols come to mind, the Kel-Tec PMR-30 in .22 WMR and the FN57 in 5.7x28. Both have reasonably sized 30 round mags standard. Carrying the 57 means you could also do the FN PS90 carbine and use the same ammo. A good combo from at least 100 yards and under. But neither is a common enough ammo compared to 9mm, 5.56 or 7.62x39. 5.7x28 can be reloaded which is a bonus compared to a rimfire round, plus is more reliable. And the 5.7x28 has been used in battle. Certain rounds can defeat body armor even. A great anti-zombie round. You don't want big fat bullet ammo, you want small lightweight hi velocity bullets. Ones that can easily penetrate the skull whether it is solid or rotting away.
In my case I would be using two ARs, leaving my CX4 in the safe. My 3-gun AR as my SDM long range rifle and my 11.5" suppressed SBR AR as my urban CQB rifle. Definitely want suppressed in close quarters.

Maybe the great panic of 2013 (or did it start in 2012?) will cause shooters to realize ammo on the shelf is just as important as 15-22's in the rack. I am a bit like the ant who stocks up for unforeseen times and keep a good supply of ammo for every caliber I own. I thought that is what GI ammo cans were made for. Also try ordering .22 from CMP, I did in Jan and a week ago Fedex delivered another 5000 rounds of Golden Eagle Aguila.
I also share .22 with a local for Hunter Safety instructor as the kids sometimes cannot find ammo for the course. I am not able to see the future but do try to prepare for any Zombies lurking on the horizon.

Don't disagree with a lot of what you said; but I was looking at what is currently in my safe......and using the slow moving "Walking Dead" zombies as what we would be facing. LOL

Ammo for the FNs is not in my inventory, and not that common in large quantity around here. The Kel-tec, does it have second strike ability?... for me that would be a must if you are using a rim fire round for defense. I like the .22mag round; in my CZ 452FS as a "walk in the woods gun", but it's a bolt gun with a 5 round mag.(light Zombie sniper rifle??)

With my 3 Berettas I would have 56-66 rounds ready to go and all spare mags.(15-30rds) will work in all 3 guns. The CX4 is short, light and with a red dot is good for head shots out to 100 yds., and I'm good to go with the 92s out to about 40-50yds.

If I get a call to appear on the "Walking Dead " next year my daily on screen walking around (looking cool on TV) load out would be backed up with an AR15 (w/ a 1-4 scope) and shotgun in/on the 4wheel drive or ATV. And given that we are on TV...... I'd SBR the CX4 (to the stock) and shotgun (14") and suppress all 3 Berettas...........need to find a good stag handled 12inch bowie knife!

I don't think you'd be hanging around to pick up brass. Unless you cleared the area and had it secured. Or firing from a fixed position. A moving head from 300 yards would be a feat in its self. A 200 yard moving head shot still pretty amazing. Any head shot made on a moving zombie inside a 100 yards is gonna take a good shot. So I'm kinda leaning towards my Saiga 12 with the poly choke cranked down and having multiple 12 and 20 round drums. Might be a little bulky but it's a sure hit at a safe distance. Then of course my Glock 19 for back up, it will hit whatever I aim it at out past 50 pretty easy. As long as I do my part. Or my Saiga ak with 75 round drums , so many choices.

good shot on moving target at 100? 200 amazing? you don't hunt predators do you? that is all i hunt. coyotes, fox, bobs, lions, badgers, prairie dogs, WOLVERINES!! (couldn't resist)

a 200 yard shot on a 25-30 pound dog that is on a fast trot is a pretty common shot on shooting sticks with any of my AR's. I can make a sitting coyote DRT with my Bushmaster Predator 20" w/75 gr TAPS and a Schmidt and Bender 1-4x24 PMII, FFP scope real easy.

using a Spike Middy with a Weaver Super Slam 1.1-6x24 FFP, 55 gr, Federal soft tips or Hornady ballistic tips i can shoot 200 all day.

night i just put the Laser Genetics ND3 Sub Zero on the pict rail on top of the Larue and PEPR scope mount, switch the S&B to the night vision settings and swap out the Weaver with the EOtech OPMOD and 3x magnifier on NV settings and i can still get head shots on dogs out to 200. that's about my view limits at night with my tired eyes, but technically you could go out to MPBR with that set up at night.

I love tier one plastic fantastic handguns, keep my wood and steel in the safe, so an SKD battle belt with 2, 3 mag each AR pouches, a 5 slot Glock or whatever handgun magazine pouch, dump bag and FA kit hooked up to an SKD chest rig, not armored, holds a lot of ammo!!!!

chest rig has a G35 w/+2 .40 mags with Hornady critical duty, drop thigh holster has G17 w/+2 same ammo in 9mm.
*** holster has G27 w/mags and can use the G35 mags as well.

aside from the Glock pistols, my Glock field knife is on my right side in front of the holster. this leaves room on my left side for a holster for a Walther P22 with a AAC Pilot II can on the gun and a Huntertown can in the little mag case with the holster. a slightly large sized double stack mag holder holds 8 total 10 round subsonic mags for the walther.

throw the wife her G19 and have her tote the FN TPS shotgun with 10 in and 6 on 00 buck, plus bandolier and 25 in the sling. She can use the 15-22 w/10 mags of SS and can for her roll. she is pretty good.

that is if we were to bug out, ATV is always stocked with everything predator hunting that i need in the desert and sometimes in winter i'm out for a full week. would just have to hook up trailer, through everything else in the bed has a windowed shell, stabilt in 5, 5 gallon cans and off we go. water and MRE's are all ready prestocked in truck if we have to bug out.
we actually intend on staying put. i have 3/4" plywood already cut for all the windows and a castle style door bar, wife decorates with flowers so it looks good.
shooting ports in the window wood, all is predrilled and ready to be put up.
we did a speed run and with the other family that is bugging in with us we can get all the perimeter done in about 2 hours, that's with the trip wire and flares, plus the infrared beams that chime in the house.

enough rambling, it's not the zombies i fear, it's the normal humans that are looking for the essentials that they did not have before it started. a quick shot to the "Apricot" (medulla oblongata) and they are down for the count.

Zombies are notoriously hard to knock down, they keep coming (albeit slowly), and when knocked down they refuse to stay down. (I watch a lot of zombie movies).

With that in mind a Mossberg 500 would be "nice".

Yes I have hunted all types and kinds. A trotting coyote would be an easier target at 200 yards (basically any hit in a 12"x12" area) would put it down. We're talking about a 6" circle at that distance. And hitting it consistently. I could tell you that I could hit the rear of a gnat at 300 yards but to be honest a moving head at 200 and 300 yards ? please.

Reason they are hard to knock down is failing to shoot/stab/crush the front of the skull. Hitting them anywhere else is just going to slow them a little and p*ss them off. Full auto is a total waste (read the WWZ book, and forget the inaccurate movie). Precision shooting at any range is what is needed.
I grew up in a family with a father that was a well known rather amazing shooter. So good that after WWII Patton asked to have him (a Signal Corps sergeant) transfered to his command in the occupation forces from another general's army entirely just to have him to shoot with in the Black Forest. Once when stationed in Alaska with West Point football HOF great Doc Blanchard, on a bet he shot a Golden Eagle in flight at 300 yards standing in a small boat with a bolt action 30-06 and a 4x scope on the first shot. I watched him as a small kid outshoot the top shotgunners in our part of the country hitting as many as 350 straight clays with an old Winchester side-by-side double against whatever expensive shotgun they wanted to shoot. I watched him take a slingshot I could not seem to get the hang of, and nail a head shot on a squirrel at 40 paces with the first steel shot he took.
So after growing up in that family and being trained to shoot his collection of firearms at least every other month until I went in the Navy, yes I can make head sized moving shots at 200 yards. I am convinced that the only reason I am not as well known as Jerry Miculek is I took a complete hiatus from shooting (and hunting) for 45 years to be involved in motorsports and did not take up shooting again till I was over 60. And with eyesight issues, bad knees, and arthritis in both hands I am not the shooter I once was. But I have fun at it these days because I have no expectation of being a great shooter anymore although I try. But I can still do some things that those issues do not effect.
Due to personal choices I do not hunt predators (one reason is my late wife and I raised and bred hybrid timber and arctic wolves for about a decade). One reason the deer population on this continent is so outrageously large is because we spent so much time eliminating our competition we neglected to take account of the balance of nature. I would have no issue hunting coyotes because they are out of balance also. But wolves, mountain lions, lynx, wildcat, panther, wolverines, weasels, minks, raptors, bears, gators, crocs, etc., I feel we have done enough to ruin their habitats. I would protect myself and others from them but I will not go out of the way to actually hunt them. That's just me. You can do what you want.

not going to get into the predator hunting discussion as both sides can produce boat loads of documentation of predation of the Elk herds from the reintroduced grey wolf, lions decimating the KOFA sheep down to a herd of 300, that's it, coyotes actually causing human death, much less what they do to the cattle ranches down here in AZ.
trust me, if every hunter took a dog each time they went out (i'm talking calling them in and taking with rifle/bow, not poisoning or helicopter or high fence hunting) we would not even put a dent in their population.

oh well, the movies show any head shot, so actually it prolly does not have to be an apricot shot, frontal/parietal lobe, according to them moving pictures, they are DRT just as well as a medulla shot.

but going back to episode 1 season 1 of the Walking Dead....... there was the woman zombie in the park who had lost the use of her legs and was slowly crawling..........

So at longer ranges I would at least test taking out the zombies pelvic girdle......reducing them to a crawl...... then close for a head shot or
use a edged weapon....... ax or machete ........ ain't TV great ....LOL
