Better .22 LR Ammo

Companies put out high quality to low grade plinking ammo.
You normally get what you pay for but now and then a low cost
box of ammo seems to work better than most in a weapon for
some odd reason.

Some like those two brands.............
I prefer CCI .22 ammo for my weapons.

Have fun.

Typically those are the two brands I have avoided since the the late 80's. Rumor has it the Remington quality has been better in their Golden bullets product line, but their Thunderbolt's no... Winchester has been reviewed extensively with comments of having a 2+% failure to fire rate across their product line. If the price is right for either brand and you are only going to be plinking and you can look past the FTF rate, go for it. Truthfully I have never been really enamored with Remington ammo, although Winchester ammo used to be my go to ammo until I noticed a dramatic change in quality from their lineup.
Personally I have found Federal branded products and CCI much more reliable for very little more money, if you can find them in your area. If you are looking for a target quality ammo that wont break the bank check out Geco's rimfire lineup. In my bolt rifle I have found it to equal Eley Tenex at a quarter of the price.

I bought a bucket of 1400 Golden Bullets at Walmart a few weeks ago for $70.74 and a 1000 pack of Winchester M-22 at $49.50.

Both shoot well in my Ruger SR22 but I do get about 1 or 2 failure to feed per 100 with the M-22

Never any issue at all with the Walmart CCI mini mags at $7.29 per 100

As previously posted, I too prefer Federal but only ammo I've found recently at decent price has been Remington Golden which seem to be ok.
Past experiences with Rem. Thunderbolts and Win. Wildcats, etc wasn't the best.
If priced good enough, try both.

My friends and I have experimented with a lot of 22 ammo in the last 3 years. We always look for CCI Mini-Mag 40 gr (not the hollow point) for best accuracy and reliability. I have had good performance from Winchester M-22, but not everyone agrees.

The Winchester bulk with the truncated cone hollow points do not do well in many semi-autos. Otherwise most Federal and Winchester types and Remington Golden Bullets are good for plinking with few failures.

But, the Winchester Power Point and Hyper-Velocity with the 40 gr truncated cone HP bullets are the most accurate in my bolt-action CZ. I get 10-shot 2" groups at 100 yds with them and they consistently produce one-shot kills on squirrels a 70+ yards.

Remington Thunderbolts will no longer be used in my M&P .22 compact or SW22 Victory. No more than 12 of them at one session in my .22 revolvers. They are filthy.

Remington Golden work well for me.

If you want truly better ammo, go for CCI. Federal is the next best and Winchester & Remington are fighting for last place as far as .22 Rimfire is concerned. While a few years ago I would have said go with the Win. over the Rem. today they both seem equally poor quality.

Over the last coupe of years shooting many .22's I can not remember ever having a mis-fire with CCI and to get one with Federal is very rare.

22.lr ammo is starting to drop in price and maybe - just maybe as the manufacturers (Win. & Rem.) start to slow down a bit their quality might start improving - let's hope so!

CCI mini-mags have always been my go to ammo, but hard to find and crazy expensive these days. I have one handgun that doesn't like the hollow point of anything, but I can't remember if it's the M&P22 or the Ruger. I personally haven't any issues with Rem Golden Bullets in the bucket. I bought one bucket long ago and still have most of it, but no problems. I also haven't had any issues with the Federal Auto-match, other's have. The .22 seems to be extremely "firearm dependent" as to reliability. If I want accuracy, I go with CCI standard velocity or Wolf Match ammo. Same accuracy, but the Wolf smells funny. I have tried CCI Green Tag and other match stuff, but it didn't shoot any better than these in my guns. A LOT more money, though.

Neither; if you want to buy the cheap stuff be prepared to suffer. i.e. failure to feed, fire or eject. Both you mentioned are dirty.

I buy any bulk box 22 ammo I can find that is not price gouging. Just got 2000 Winchester at WM this week at 50 dollars a thousand. I tried it out no failures and did not shoot any dirtier than anything else I have on hand including CCI mini mags. In shooting my CZ452 the Remington bulk grouped much better than mini mags. So much for relying on brand for groups. As this next election gets closer I am getting any reasonably priced 22 I run on to regardless of who makes it. When the election drought hits any ammo is better than none.

Last time I bought REM was about 15 years ago, and the quality was so bad I sent it back to them and got a full refund. I won't use it now unless they are the only one standing after everyone else went out of business.

After 3 years with zero availability I recently bought a brick of WIN. It was so bad that I contacted the manufacturer and got a refund again. At least they were nice about it.....LOL.

CCI is always good, and FED has been my goto for 10 years now.

If the election turns sour and availability is scarce, I'll stock up WIN for my rifles and revolvers if that's all there is, but no REM will ever touch any of my guns again.

And my experience with a .22 compact and 1911-22 is just the opposite. Rem Golden Bullet runs better than the Winchester. Just goes to show guns are unique.
