Just made a batch, so thought I would pass this recipe along; it is really good!

2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
5 tablespoons butter or margarine
12 ounce can of Carnation evaporated milk
1 tablespoon vanilla

Blend sugar and cocoa over VERY low heat. Blend for two minutes. Add butter. (It helps if butter is cut into small pieces.) Blend butter into mixture, stirring constantly. When blended, slowly add Carnation, continuing to stir. When mixture is smooth, boil rapidly for one minute. Remove from heat, add vanilla, and stir. If you prefer, rum extract or a small amount of your favorite spirits could be added.

Allow to cool for about twenty minutes. Result is a chocolate sauce with a rich flavor, that does clobber up on the ice cream like commercial hot fudge sauces. Do not refrigerate leftovers, if any, as the sauce will turn sugary.

Our family hot fudge recipe is very similar to one above. . Slight differences: powdered sugar instead of regular, unsweetened bar instead of powder. I also learned to add about a tablespoon of Karo syrup as "clumping insurance". Always better and smoother after heated and cooled twice.
