I too noticed the "style manual" shift of terms today and thought, gee, they've changed the words.
Yes, the style manuals ARE real and they are used by writers of news to make sure they use the proper terms for things.
For instance, years go "Pro Life vs. Pro Abortion" was suddenly changed in the AP Style Manual to "Anti-Abortion vs. Pro Choice."
"Pro" carries a positive connotation to people but "Anti" sounds narrow-minded and negative.
I believe they are currently in the process of ending using the word "Assault Weapon" because we so OWN them on this issue and they know it.
"High Powered Rifle" though would easily apply to any centerfire rifle . . . and thus be the next step in banning all of our single shot, autoloading centerfire hunting rifles.
Scary!

PS: Sadly, they seem to have chosen the wrong time to trot out the new term . . . since handguns were used.
Too bad there wasn't at least one "sheepdog" in that building rather than all sheep.
