Bipod Recommendation?

What do you need a bipod for on an AR? Just rest your rifle on the magazine if you're using 30rd mags.
Then use your money for more ammo :).

That being said I've played with the UTG stuff and it's heavy and doesn't seem well constructed.
If you're looking at light use it will probably work but if you ever get rough with it be ready for failure.
Harris Bipods run about 50-80 depending on which model and if you scout eBay and gun broker you can probably find a used one that will be the same price you're looking at but of far higher quality.

The only gun I keep a bipod on is my Ruger Charger (and it's a Harris). I have another Harris that I got used for $20 that I use on my hunting rifle from time to time.

I'll just be using it at the range every once and a blue moon. That's why I can't see spending a bunch of $$$ on one. After furniture, extra mags, red dots, and everything else my wife is gonna kill me! :D

If you look on eBay for Omega Tactical Manufacturing they make a pretty good one that is inexpensive. I have one on my second AR. :D

Seriously have you tried to shoot off of your magazine, I cannot get steady enough with my balance point in the middle of my rifle!

Yep, precision shooting is better with a bipod or "sled" type rest.:)

My local range only goes to 100m but I have no issues keeping 2-3moa with iron sights using either my elbow with a 20 round mag or the mag itself with a 30 round mag.
I shoot either XM193 or MFS (cheap steel Russian) most of the time.

It's a semi automatic rifle with a chrome lined barrel. Not a precision rifle. I can easily accept that kind of accuracy out of it.

At 100 yds, a well supported AR is capable of sub MOA groups. That is the difference.

A purpose built AR shooting good ammo, yes. An off the shelf AR with chrome lined bore and non free floated barrel with XM 193 is capable of 1- 2 MOA, max. Heck, XM193 is made to be a 3ish moa ammo.

Most bolt guns aren't even sub moa off the shelf.

Not to mention that an AR is meant to be a fighting carbine (or rifle) . Not a sniper rifle.

I say spend the extra 30/40 bucks and get a Harris. I bought one of those cheap ones at Walmart for my 10/22, and it still wobbles. Bought the picatinny rail adapter for the Harris and slapped on the Harris I already owned that was on my AR. Dead solid. I can put the rounds in the same hole all day long.

My bipods dont wobble, I didnt buy a cheap one at wal-mart nor will I ever.

bharner I dont know what brand of AR you shoot and am not really concerned about it. My S&W M&P15 Sport is sub-moa out of the box. I have shot Colt's and Bushy's that aren't but My Sport is.

I agree, mine is sub minute of angle straight out of the box, that is why I forgot about buying a Colt.

I'm putting it on a sport. I was getting sub MOA groups off hand at 50yrds last week. The range I go to is 300yrds and would like to get out a little but. I'm using iron sights now and plan on putting the money into the scope. I guess I'll use bags for now, I just thought you guys might have some suggestions. I purchased a really cheap Caldwell a couple of years ago and put it on a Rem Police Tactical. I am getting SUB MOA groups all day long at 300yrds with that bipod.

It's nice hearing good things about the Sports. I'm not too familiar with them as both of the shops in my area that stock them can't keep them on the shelves.
Are the barrels chrome lined? I have a buddy who has an AR identical to mine other than he has a stainless steel barrel and he gets better accuarcy out of his. I cheaped out/got impatient while saving for my AR and picked up a cheaper barrel.

Also, what range are you getting sub MOA groups at?

I'm going to have to keep my eye out for a Sport...

They arent lined they are melonite treated which is harder and slicker than chrome with 1-8 5R rifling and they are super accurate to the point where Smith is starting to put that barrel on a lot of their other rifles. I am sub-moa out to 250 and shooting prairie dogs one shot one kill in excess of 260. I also am running a 6-24x50 scope and could use more. I had an 8-32x42 but the field of view was too small

Great Article, because I dont do magazine dumps or get my barrel that hot it will last forever. So my melonite barrel is only 1/4 degree more accurate that seems to be enough...Thanks

Thanks. My barrel is made by FN so I figured it would be good. Looks like I might have to put a scope on and see if I can pull tighter groups. At 100 yds the irons cover most of the 8 ring and everything smaller.

Snipers are not war fighters? Soldiers with m4's never need to make precise shots at long range targets or targets mostly concealed by cover?

Not what I said. Snipers generally have purpose built weapons. And there is a reason why SPR and DMR rifles exist. I also have heard stories from friends who have spent time in the military of hitting 6-8" steel at 300 yds with either an Acog or an RDS during training. (But that's also 2 moa).
