A birthday Range day outing with my grandson, daughter and SIL. We had a blast, literally. This is what a beautiful Florida winter Sunday is for: a fun, safe, family event. We were there for almost five hours and shot most of the thousand plus rounds I brought.
Some background why this day was so special.
The family has had a rough couple of months. Bella, our granddaughter, had a relapse of her leukemia last Fall (thank you again for all your prayers) and we are now waiting the results of her stem cell transplant. Her brother has been her donor twice - bone marrow the first go around, stem cells this time. He's a trooper! He turned thirteen this week and was told he was getting a birthday surprise on Sunday.
This morning my daughter tells him that they are taking him to a petting zoo.
"But mom, I'm thirteen!" Meaning "I'm too old to go to a petting zoo!"
"You'll like the petting zoo" My daughter tells him meaning you are going.
But he's a trooper, and climbs into the back of the Jeep. They drive out to the pine woods west of town where he's expecting a day of lambs, goats and other barnyard animals. What a surprise when they pull into my pistol and rifle club and I'm waiting by the front office to get them signed in!
We went to the back members only Range where we can shoot steel plates and targets.
That's him with my S&W model 910. What a great day!

Wow, that is my kind of "petting zoo!" From the look of that target, you have taught him well!

Happy Birthday Young Pistol Shooter!!!

That's a wonderful "trooper" of a grandson you have there. Too bad someone so young has to see his sister through such tough times. God bless him and Bella.
Give him an extra hug for us.

Excellent day!

But keen eyes want to know why or how you have a S&W 915 that appears stainless or silver of some manner? The picture only allows so much detail but it looks more like a 5904 than a 915.

Bet you wouldn't take a million bucks for that day. Outstanding. When are we going again?

That was a great surprise for him! Well done.

My nine yr grandson has been at it for awhile now, but got another 8yr old that shot his first 22 rifle - a Chipmunk - at Thanksgiving. And I also have a granddaughter named Bella. Good luck to you and your granddaughter Bella.

Appears to be minimal hearing protection?
As someone now cursed with tinnitus, get him the best that you can.

I have fond memories of going shooting with my dad when I was a kid and I'm sure your Grandson will never forget this day.

Talk about different times. It was some 60 years ago when I was a kid and my dad would take me to the town dump where we'd shoot rats with his old .22 single shot rifle. Plenty of targets as they were running all over the place.

I know what a great day that was for all of you. My 19 yr old granddaughter loves to go shooting with me and can't wait until she's old enough to buy her own firearm and get her CHP. I never have to worry about finding someone to go to the range with me.:D

You're correct. He was shooting the 910, not the 915. That was at home. Thanks for the catch.

Haha, not trying to nitpick but it's fun to look close at the pictures and see what we see. If this conversation had been posted in the semiauto area of this site where we eat, sleep and breathe the 1-2-3rd Gens, there would have been 6 guys posting similar thoughts within 20 minutes! :D

That's just great. These are times you don't forget.
As soon as our granddaughter gets out of the hospital in April (God willing), and she has her strength back, we're all going to the range! ;)

What a great day that must have been! Looks like a really nice range, too.

Anytime spent with grand children is very special. When they get older and interested in the opposite sex, you will find yourself not as important to them as before. Except !!!! When you then become the " wallet". I am now at the wallet stage in life and provide necessary funds needed for special occasions. Enjoy them while they are young, they grow up real quick!!
