I'm new to big bore ammo and revolvers. I just purchased some Black Hills (all I could find) 44 Spl. 210 gr. FPL. I want to shoot it in a 696 3". I would expect it to be a mild to medium load for the cowboy shooting fraternity as that what packaging would suggest but not sure. This will probably be the last box of factory ammo I buy as I'm starting to get set up to reload the caliber for some serious practice. If this gun were a M24 I wouldn't need to ask but it's not.

Anyone know anything about this ammo?

Thanks

Do a Google search on Black Hills ammo!
They make very high quality ammunition[especially target rifle styles] and reloads of some rifle and handgun ammo.
What you purchased will be of no issue in a 696!!
They've been around for more than a few years. Their popularity makes their ammo difficult to find at times and that is also driven for the fact that they load centerfire for some, if not most, of the military shooting teams.
They are not an especially large operation - IMO. But, they load great ammo.

This load is rated at 700 fps, so it is rated at about the same velocity as the 246 gr Remington factory RNL with a lighter bullet - mild. Not that I would want to stand downrange from one...;) .

It's ammunition that I wish was available here in Canada.
What's the deal with .44 Special anyways? Why is it so hard to find, and why is it priced more than .44 Magnum? (At least north of the 49th parallel anyways!)

You'd think less brass, and powder, and an ammo suited for range time would be more accessible. :(

It's not just north of the border, it's everywhere, and I can't make any sense of it either. They use far less powder, extra-cheap (soft) lead bullets, and charge a fortune for this underpowered junk. Must be that fancy "Cowboy" packaging they spent so much money on............

Yep -- That about sums it up. It won't recoil much and will be good for "getting to know" your 696. The 44 Special really IS a reloader's cartridge unless you want to spend $1+ apiece for the boutique ammo loaded by Buffalo Bore, etc ....

I've had good results with Power Pistol with the lighter bullets.
