I called Black Hole Weaponry today and spoke to JP (JD?). VERY NICE GUY. Seems to know what he is talking about.

BHW does not make barrels for the M&P 10 anymore. They did for a while, but S&W changed the manufacturing process, and it is taking too long to remove the barrel extension and assemble it to a new barrel. They also could not guarantee the new barrel with S&W's extension because they did not have material certifications on the (reused) extension.

BUT BHW expressed interest in making complete barrels for the M&P 10!

Those of you that are interested in a barrel upgrade SHOULD CALL AND REQUEST they move forward on this

FIGURES!

BHW had a young man (Jason) who was very much into R&D. He was the one I communicated with when we started kicking this around here. He knew his stuff and was eager to assist; possibly too eager? To my surprise I found that he was no longer there (don't know where he wound up unfortunately). Looks to me like S&W smelled some meaningful competition and took steps to jinx it.

S&W's MP-10 is a good rifle for the most part but their insistence on keeping it proprietary has really chafed my arse. If they keep screwing with their customer base more people should go to Aero Precision and build an M-5 where they can pick and choose non-proprietary innards... Jes-Sain'

Supposedly, as long as you have the barrel extension, BHW and another barrel maker can work with you. It would require you sending in your old barrel to make it happen. I think the other maker is Satern but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Did you read the first post?

Have you actually called BHW and asked them?

I did - and got a very polite "no". What they explained to me makes perfect business sense - Too expensive, too much liability.

They DID follow that No with a "we are interested in offering a complete drop in barrel" IF they get some more inquiries.

You can also use a Noveske barrel, but you would have to buy a DPMS bolt and carrier (about $800 for everything).

I wonder how much more accurate the Noveske setup would be considering the cost.

Yes I did but there has been mixed responses elsewhere.

With two of you having called them, that narrows it down from one person receiving bad information and another receiving a different answer.

So, it's definitely a "no" now.

I would hope one is getting precision quality if they are paying that much money to switch a barrel. Meaning, being able to take full advantage or the .308's capability out 1,000 yards plus. I don't expect it to match a bolt rifle but for $800 it better be darn close!

Real Objective?

Personally I believe owners of the MP-10 are more concerned with having an option to be able to replace the barrel should they have a desire or necessity to do so, not necessarily to build a 1000+ meter competition weapon. Tossing the MP-10 into the spare parts bin [IF] anything goes South has to be in the mind of people who own one. Most want to be able to 'choose' what they want/when they want and that is why there are so many AR-'tinker-toy' followers out there. :p

I have spoken personally to Jason at BHW when he was still there and posted on this forum what he said. I believe at least one or two of our brothers here HAD them pull their extension and install it on one of BHW's barrels. Hopefully one of those who had it done will weigh in here... Could be that after doing a couple they realized the possible liability OR that S&W waived their 'legal hammer' at BHW...

M&P 10 Replacement barrels

I'm going to start a new post for replacement barrels and the parts necessary to do it.

This post was regarding Black Hole Weaponry barrels. I haven't given up on them, but I want to develop a thread that has the correct information.

Check out the new posting for more information.
