Blatant Price Gouging on Ammo

Stopped by a gun shop I frequent today, never bought anything there as I always felt they were overpriced to begin with (today, a used 4" 64 with 2 piece barrel and IL for $565...NOT!!!). A few weeks ago, I noticed they had some Federal .38Spl 129Gr +p+ for $29 for 50 round box. Today, same box is stickered.........hold on, wait for it.....$63.95!!!!. They had some Federal 9MM +p+ for the same $64 a box of 50. And a new sign of limit 2 boxes, must show ID. I won't even bother stopping there anymore. Do we have to look forward to this madness for another 4, maybe 8 years????

Lot of "scalping" going on. Not to me as I just don't buy any and have been known to tell some of them I'll not be back when prices go down elsewhere.

party A has a product for sale and party B can either pay it or not. you have alternatives. online, walmart, etc. if there is a 'shortage' then why does more become avialble every day to various stores. its not like companies are not making it. there obviously is a price equilibrium somewhere.

deals are out there. just keep hunting them.

My local Walmart stores (3 of them) are all out of handgun calibers (even .22lr) and the employees are telling folks their warehouses are completely out.....

Not flaming the fire; just saying this is ridiculous.

I too, refuse to shop, for anything, at the businesses that are into gouging. As for things returning to normal in a couple months, I'll believe it when I see it. I was hearing the "a couple months" prediction back in Feb. And I believed it. But now, I think it's going to be a long haul. And around here, it isn't just ammo. It's everything relating to shooting. Even reloading supplies are scarce. As long as retailers sell case after case of ammo to people who don't even own a gun, but who buy just to scalp to people foolish enough to pay the ridiculous price they ask, the shortage will continue. There needs to be more one or two box limits, and less foolish people. And even then, we're still stuck with Obama and Holder for another 3.75 years.

I am not taking up for those vendors since I don't know them or their particular situation but have you considered that they had to pay much more for the ammo you just saw and are passing on the increase? Although I hope Erich is correct, my gut feeling is that we are beginning to see a blanket inflation on many goods. I could have claimed the same price gouging yesterday when I went and priced motor oil ( up over 60% the last 5 months and 9% from 2 weeks ago) and automotive batteries (up 56% in 6 months).

I truly hope Erich is right. Once the market "gets used to" a higher price, it almost never goes back down.

I think the days of $5.99 boxes of .38 Special have gone the way of the dinosaur. One thing is for sure, with the gov'ment printing money like toilette paper, we're all sure to see BIG inflation over the next few years.

Wholesale prices are and have been going right through the ceiling and on up through the roof especially on ammo and most reloading components. Powder does seem to be the exception and hasn't taken any real big jumps so far. It's still in short supply because of the number of people who have chosen to begin "hording" even of things they don't have any use for. People are bragging about buying .380 ammo while admitting they don't even own one. I suppose I could make a "guess" that these people will be hauling the stuff to gun shows and sticking it to their neighbors but then that would just be a guess except for the fact that just this very thing was happening at the last Gun Show I attened.

Lots of stuff has doubled and even tripled, while lots of stuff simply isn't available at any price from the Wholesalers. It's not impossible that the prices might drop back down but we're going to have to find the raw materials at a price that will let this happen as well. Copper, Brass, Lead and Tin are all at an all time high right now.

I can't find anything that would suggest that they are even 50% of what they were a year ago let alone at an all time high? Maybe I'm looking at the wrong data?

No, this is outright gouging. These are the same boxes they had on the shelf a few weeks ago, not new stock they've been gouged on by some supplier. And $565 for a used 64 is some major gouging too in my book, I honestly don't know how this place sells anything.

Well, I don't want to call them out in a public forum, but they are in a land west of detroit, where one could exchange firearms (get it).

I think your local Walmarts are the same as mine (I'm in Stafford). I'd usually take Walmart scuttlebutt with a grain of salt, however other similar reports from non scalping dealers do seem to suggest that shipments will be hard to come by through the end of the year for centerfire handgun and rifle rounds.

Natchez, which usually has had fair prices is now charging 20 dollars a box for 9mm FMJ.

I know it's an odd-ball round but was just on the Winchester web sight and they havs an MSRP of $57 listed for a 50 round box of .45 Win Mag.

Georgia Arms is getting $85 for their 100 round bulk pack of 230 grain ball in that caliber.

I'm going to have to start practicing with my bow and arrow again!
