I can’t stand them but figured some of you might enjoy Hemingway’s recipe:

In a note to writer Carlos Baker, Hemingway set down his recipe for a Bloody Mary: "To make a pitcher of Bloody Marys (any smaller amount is worthless) take a good sized pitcher and put in it as big a lump of ice as it will hold. (This to prevent too rapid melting and watering of our product.) Mix a pint of good Russian vodka and an equal amount of chilled tomato juice. Add a tablespoon full of Worcestershire sauce. Lea and Perrins is usual but you can use A1 or any good beef-steak sauce. Stirr (with two rs). Then add a jigger of fresh-squeezed lime juice. Stir. Then add small amounts of celery salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper. Keep on stirring and taste to see how it is doing. If you get it too powerful, weaken with more tomato juice. If it lacks authority add more vodka."

A guy I knew said bloody marys made him sick, so he couldn't touch tomato juice anymore. So, he switched to vodka and orange juice. Sure enough, that made him sick too. After that he couldn't drink orange juice anymore. On to cranberry juice, and wouldn't you know it, the cranberry made him sick too.....

He said it took a long time to realize that maybe the problem was the vodka.  :D :D

I only have them for the celery stalk, pickled string bean, Giant Green stuffed olives and slice of carrot stick, placed inside the glass !!

Bloody Marys are better if I start with gin. Vodka always smells like the doctor’s office. Then Clamato, which I guess makes it a bloody Caesar, Worcestershire (essentially an infusion of anchovies), lemon, hot sauce or chili powder, and celery salt on the rim. Horseradish plays well, but is not essential.

If I am paying someone to make it, they can add all the cold cuts and crudites they like. I’ll jus add a wedge of lemon or lime.

I loves me a good hardy bloody Mary! That is not a bad recipe, I could drink it all day long.

I recently discovered potato based vodka. Cold River is really good but it is very hard to find. My NEW favorite I discovered on the cruise we did last month called Chopin. You might find a vodka that costs a little more but I challenge you to find one that tastes better. It's absolutely KILLER.

I love going to places that have a "Bloody Mary Bar". I go crazy trying to cram in all the ingredients I really want. But no matter what I use or have to leave out they always hit the spot.

Edit to add: Also, never be afraid to try a Bloody Maria, same recipe only made with tequila instead of vodka. Very, very good.

I drank only one. It was not a good experience.

I was 15 and had already consumed a half-quart of lemon sour with a half-pint of Seagram's 7 Crown. A girl friend offered me a Bloody Mary to celebrate our football team's victory that night.

It caused a violent reaction with the other libation I'd consumed and I was forced to expel all in her mother's basement washtubs.

I've never had another Bloody Mary and I'm not fond of tomato juice to this day.

Only had them once. We were at a softball tournament somewhere in Delaware and the had a camping area there. I took my pkup camper. We were awoken the next AM after a night of beer to one of my guys pouring bloody Mary's. We went on to win all our games that day so needless to say we did the same thing on Sunday. Won the damn tourney and haven't had one since.

Never saw the red beer until I went up to the Midwest.
Then came out West, started cross country skiing with preppy- yuppies, started drinking Mimosas.

I've also been known to enjoy a red beer with either tomato or clamato juice.

I discovered "red beer" my first tour on The Rock (Okinawa). Our distribution of American beers was temporarily interrupted and all we could get was some rot-gut beer from the Philippines called San Miguel. Believe it or not it even tasted worse than Bud Lite!

We started cutting it with tomato juice to make it fit to drink. Now a days when I feel like a red beer I use Zingzang bloody Mary mixer. It goes down mighty good on a hot day after doing a few hours of yard work.
