Bob Hope

My father told a story about Bob Hope during WWII. Dad was a Medic and was stationed at Ft. McPherson at the time. He said the audience for the show was arraigned by rank, highest ranks in front and moving back. As he told it, Hope refused to go on until the officers moved to the back and the lower ranking enlisted men were moved to the front.

Bob Hope was born in England, but was a great American. I last saw him in 1980. What a class act. I believe he was actually given an Honorable Discharge from the military, by special act of Congress.

In Nam the front row was always reserved for the wounded guys.

Bob Hope was one of the premier collectors of Nazi weapons and military memorabilia in the US. Quite a bit of the collection was acquired from gifts from GIs and vets. I've always wondered what became of the collection. Anyone know ? Ed.

I heard it was all auctioned off. Also, Clint Eastwood collects WWII German. I met his "dealer" who owned a great shop in Goslar, Germany back in 2000.

Martha Ray was a nurse and I believe she did serve in Viet Nam. I have read that she did spend a lot of time at hospitals in England, Korea, and Vietnam.

Actually, I heard she was also a Nurse in WWII and in Korea. Ill see if I can find that info and post it here if found? I saw photos of her ia Hospital in either WWII or Korea???

Close. Bob Hope is the only civilian ever made an honorary veteran of the armed forces, for his service entertaining the troops, overseas. He also earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal. I think he earned just about every award possible in the USA. I know he was awarded honorary doctorates on multiple occasions.

I saw him on a talk show within a year of his death. He was 99 years old, and very frail, but his mind was still very sharp. He got in some good quips, as I recall.

A bit of trivia: Fatty Arbuckle, the great silent film star whose career was destroyed by false accusations of rape and murder, discovered Bob Hope, and got him started in show business. True story.
