Bodyguard 380 arrives

I have owned a S&W Sigma 380 for years and always thought it was the best of the 380 pocket pistols. Obviously, I was the only one who did because S&W discontinued production. For some reason they made a version in 9mm for those macho men who like 14 ounce 9mm pistols - I never met anyone who would fire it more than once. I think if they had made a 32 cal version it would have been the best of the 32 caliber pocket pistols as well. When my Sigma 380 wears out (it is said to be good for only about 2000 rounds) I'm sure I'll replace it with the 380 Bodyguard - the only other choice for me would be a Sig P238.

I bought my partner a Sigma 380 for a retirement present. I've never heard of or seen one in any calibre other than 380. The slides were made of a material called Zamak that didn't have a long service life. It was a cute pocket pistol that predates everything, I don't know why is wasn't more popular. S&W must have had problems with it though since they weren't produced that long.

Yes there is a firing pin safety so no worries there. With the long trigger pulll the only way this pistol is going to discharge is with a deliberate pull of the trigger. Check out the range report I just posted, I should have incorporated it into this thread.

Bodyguard 380 questions

Hi Mag318,
I bought the Bodyguard 380 a few days ago, I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

I saw you had posted on the Glock forum about the Bodyguard 380 but I wasn't able to post a reply to you. You mentioned you bought a few extra clips, where did you get them? I've been looking around the web but haven't found any. Also have you bought a holster for it yet if so what do you recommend?

My last question. Isn't the round capacity of the clip 6+1? I cannot load the clip with 6 rounds, the clip just will not push up and lock in place without having the slide pulled back and held open. I can have 5 rounds in the clip and the clip will lock in. I'm not an firearms expert by any means but do I have a couple of semi-auto pistols and do not have this problem but this is my first small sub-compact pistol. Do you know if this is normal? I have the Springfield XD 45 ACP and can load a full clip with no problem.

The manual itself doesn't mention having to load the clip with the slide open.

Thanks in advance

Black Crowe, inserting a fully loaded magazine is hard with a lot of semiautos, my Bodyguard included. Just push it in forcefully and it will seat. As for new magazines go back to where bought your pistol and they should be able to get them. My dealer just ordered a bunch of them and hopefully they'll arrive soon. You're going to love your new pistol when you shoot it, these are great little pistols.

I'd probably love mine too, if it ever arrives. Took my dealer 7 days before he emailed his ffl to the seller. I was told by the seller, the gun was shipped last Wednesday, but my dealer claims he hasn't received it. Someone isn't telling the truth. Being that I've had "issues" with this dealer many times in the past, I guess it's time to try another lgs. I hate playing games, especially with my money. This whole deal leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Rant over.

As I mentioned in another post, S&W is out of stock on Bodyguard 380 mags and don't know when they'll be back in stock again. They encouraged my dealer to keep checking back with them.

Hey Nice looking B/G.I like the looks just cant get into a 380 too small a round for my tastes. But i do like the fact that they put a nice one together.Enjoy ;)

Thanks Mag318. I'm just a little apprehensive about possibly bending or damaging something by forcing the clip in. With 5 rounds in the clip it slides right in light butter.

By way what are you using as a holster for the Bodyguard?

I had wondered why I hadn't heard a range report from you on it.

We got the 380's in our store a couple days ago. A couple of observations, the safety is pretty hard to engage on our store sample. The laser is very easy to turn on accidentally, as the button sticks out on the side of the dust cover, several people have activated it when putting it down. All in all, a very nice feeling gun. they are going for $499.

I picked up a BG 380 over the weekend for a little under $450 at my local shop. Haven't shot it yet but I really like the fit and finish. I also have an LCP with the CT laser and the two guns are very close in size when so equipped. The BG a hair longer and taller. Fits in my hand better than the LCP for some reason.

I find the laser actually a little too difficult to turn on, it takes a fairly forceful press to get it to turn on (at least for my particular gun). The laser does have a 5 minute auto timer shut off, which is great. But I like the pressure switch and position of the LCP CT better.

The safety is stiff, yes I agree there.

Right now, making due with an Uncle Mikes size 1 pocket holster, which is a little too snug. It does fit in my DeSantis Superfly for my LCP w/CT perfectly.

Anybody know of any options for an IWB or OWB holster??

I back-ordered mine about 10 days ago, OMBExpress.com. They have an LEO price of $390 + $20 shipping. The only problem is I have no idea when it will be received by them from S&W. By the way, check their site, they have very lenient LEO requirements, to include airline pilots and firefighters.

Question for the experts here:

What exactly does it mean that the Bodyguard 380 has "second-strike capability" (see link below)?

Smith & Wesson Now Shipping BODYGUARD 380 Pistols & Revolvers

Am I understanding correctly that it is effectively the same as a double-action-only revolver, such as the S&W 640, in that the trigger raises and drops the hammer (and, in fact, does everything except cycle the slide) with each pull, as my now out-of-service BG 380 appeared to do? If so, why is it called "second-strike capability" and not "repeat-strike" or "infinite-strike" or something like that?

You do understand the term correctly. As to why is it called second strike instead of something? Who the heck knows. I think we are arguing semantics at that point. Maybe because if you hit the primer twice and it doesn't ignite, it is time to consider getting a different round in the chamber... ;)

Thanks to George Bush (HR218) a retired LEO like myself can carry in all 50 states. I carry the BG 380 in an Uncle Mikes pocket holster.
