Looking in Supica/Nahas, and still puzzled. What have I got here? ...bought a 629-2, (according to internet seller). 8 3/8 barrel. Has the integral top slots and keyhole side cutouts for scope on the barrel; looks factory. as a 629-2 should have. However, inside frame says 629-1! Also, trigger is only 0.3" wide, smooth, stainless or brushed shiny steel. I am thinking that is not factory either according to descriptions ??

Mechanics excellent, lock-up, timing, end shake, etc. as should be. Sights match descriptions of model. It does have (I believe not offered by S&W), Pachmayr grips.

Serial # BBC8XXX on forward frame and butt the same. The number in the yoke is different...I assume that is OK?

How do you see this as far as variation from published model specs, and especially the scope slots and trigger differences from stamped 629-1.?

Thanks a lot

One of these, yes? Can't remember which this one is. Will look later on, but you'll likely have an answer before I get back online sometime around 02:30 Monday.

You have a "Model 629 with scope mount". On page 258 in the SCSW 3rd edition. The description says .400" serrated trigger. This model was MFG in 1989. The 629-2 change occurred in 1988. Yours could have been a 629-1 frame that was left over and assembled with the scope mount barrel. Your trigger however is non factory.

Thanks guys...Yes, my scope mount barrel looks like the one in the first reply. So, as simple as that...they just put the new barrel on an older frame.
About the trigger, so it has to be 0.4 wide and serrated to be factory? Why replacement would you guess...were the factory triggers known to be a problem? My factory Model 27 trigger is fantastic and I thought all Smiths were that way.

I would guess, without seeing it, that someone polished and narrowed the factory trigger since no one makes after-market triggers for S&W revolvers. It seems more likely to me that whoever did the modifications to the revolver also put the trigger on a grinder and polisher. It is, as described, definitely not original in the sense that it has either been replaced by a modified factory trigger or it is the original trigger modified. :)

Some people dislike wide triggers. I prefer them and have retrofitted the S&W revolvers I shoot frequently with factory target triggers and hammers.

I thank all of you for your answers. Now I know what I have, what is original and what is not. Because mechanics appear excellent, all that is left is for me to shoot it and enjoy it. For the $575 I paid, I have no reason for buyers remorse even if the trigger is altered and grips are not original. Thanks again.
