I was in an LGS making a return trip to purchase a 4053 I looked at last week when a couple guns caught my eye, they had 2 686 2 inch'ers in the case, one was a new -6 with lock and MIM which did not interest me, the other one had a chromed trigger and chromed bobbed hammer, apon closer inspection it was a -3. Nice gun. Then I noticed behind it was what appeared to be a 3 inch 686 with chromed trigger and hammer, so I looked at it, popped open the crane and staring me in the face were the letters:
CS 1
2M
MOD 686

Wow, a CS-1!! This was one of those guns you read about but never see. Price tag was $599, I haggled him down to $575 OTD!!

Gun has some holster wear and a scratch or 2 here or there, but is mechanically cherry and nice bore, nice action. Also had round butt magna's which I understand are probably not original to the gun, I have not had them off to see if they number to the gun, but regardless, I am pretty happy.

Needless to say, the 4053 I went there to buy is still in the shelf. How did I do? I might in fact go back there next week to buy the 2.5" 686-3 too, they had it marked $599, but I might be able to do better.

By the way, I know what the M means, but what does 2M mean, that's a first, the 2 was a little offset from the M, like maybe it was stamped at a different time.

Yes, as a matter of fact you did :) . The 2M stamping suggests it was a USCS issue gun, from my understanding of other posts, and the Magnas may have been original (many came with Pachmayr Compacs).

Now, the photos to prove it and you are set! Well done.

Here are some pics, best I can do.

Note the rub mark above the crane recess in this photo, it's got the same scratch on both sides of the gun in the same spot, I can only guess some sort of holster did this.

You're under arrest.....

The dealer obviously didn't know what he had. Excellent score!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats

The odd thing is, this was one of those gun stores still trying to sell low end AR's for $1500+, 22 ammo for 20 cents a round, glocks for $600, and some of their revolver prices were wacky, like a 14-2 in fair shape with the wrong grips for $700, but a couple gems. He had a couple commerative 586's with prices over a grand too.

I'm guessing the stocks are from a slightly earlier era, perhaps up to the late '70s, so are likely not original. The good news is you can afford to find the originals from the money you saved when buying the gun :) .

I trained with and had one of those guns issued to me from the academy. They all came with Pachmayer "Compac" grips on them. If anything else was ever issued on them, I never saw it. Many of the CS-1's didnt get much use, as many guys turned them in almost as soon as they got to their duty station as the policy allowed them to carry just about anything, so most folks had Colt 1911's and Sig 220's and 226's and whatever they wanted to put into service. Great find!

Very Nice, that is maybe the one 686 Snubby I would give up my 686-4 2.5" for, maybe not though it has the nicest action of any S&W I have!

Nicely done. When they were initially made available on the open market my favorite shop had one with the Pachs, another with the same wood grips. The CS-1 had a dull bead blast looking finish as part of it's list of features.

great find on that one.I ran across mine kinda the same way.went to a gander mtn and they had it marked $325 said it was a 4 inch.I jumped on it then he handed me the box numbered to the gun when I was paying for it.its on top in the picture
