Bought a 686 Plus PC 5" have some questions.

I bought a 686 plus #11760.
Picked it up at the store got it home and started to inspect it.
Only 2 of the 7 of the 7 chambers would let me chamber a bullet.
Whole revolver was covered with small slightly smaller than sand metal shavings. Chambers, barrel, inside the action.
I cocked the hammer and its all over the inside too, thick layer of fine metal shavings.
I called S&W customer services and asked them about it and they said that this is normal and that I am supposed to take it apart and take out all the guts and clean it up before shooting.
I have been shooting and collecting guns for over 20 years.

Is getting a revolver packed full of small metal shavings normal?

I'd say cleaning a new gun is normal since they're usually covered in preservative grease. And chambers being dirty isn't unusual since they test fire em. But metal shavings all over the gun is definitely not right. I'd try cleaning them off though, but take pictures in case you have more issues later, since if you send it back to S&W they've got about an eight week turnaround time at a minimum.

Probably the best course of action at this point is to give it a good cleaning inside and out, then assess where you're at. I would take "before" pictures as mentioned above.

That is totally unacceptable! I have NEVER purchased any gun from any maker like that was like that. Don't let it slip through the cracks. Mine is a Pro Series. Bob

If you bought it new (or even used), I would not do anything to it and first take it back to the store and see if they would refund your money or exchange it. If not, call S&W back and get someone on the phone who seems to have some sense and tell them the problem with it and hopefully they will take care of it. Whoever the idiot is at S&W who told you to disassemble the gun inside and out before shooting should be reported and fired. Most companies frown upon an individual taking the gun apart, especially a new one, to work on it on their own; could void the warranty.
 
My guess is that the hopeless and hapless individual on the phone had no clue about the difference between a revolver and a semi-auto. She was probably just following a script to tell the customer that a pistol should be field stripped and cleaned before use.

Both the revolver and the employee are a sad testament as to the current state of affairs at Smith & Wesson.
 
Last time I went to S&W for an obvious problem they told me to go pound sand. Its going to a gun smith any way. I am disappointed but not surprised. Going to need to chamfer and polish the cylinder any way, CNC trigger, CNC hammer etc. Well EDM cut parts but we all adults here and know what I mean.
 
WOW - sorry for your woes!!

This is just WRONG!!! S&W's quality control has been going down the toilet for 30 years now but it seems just when it can't get worse..... it does! I've said this before and I will say it again, QC comes from the top down.

IMHO whoever is the CEO should be dismissed today! There has got to be at least one person there who can do better and if not they need to get an outsider. You know there are times I actually think they secretly want to fail as a manufacturing company. As silly as that sounds how do they not get this after so many years, complaints, returns, etc. ?

I'd disassemble, clean, properly lube and put it back together before firing one round. All that manufacturing metal dust/chips can scratch and foul things up. Hope you get it straightened out quickly.
 
If it's that way on the outside, I hate to think what the inside looks like. S&W can't expect customers to disassemble the gun to clean it. Running a bore brush through is one thing but I consider anything that involves removing the side plate a job for a gunsmith or at least a skilled amateur.

see post #7 here. I took it with a cellphone and its not focused well but you can see the metal shavings on EVERYTHING.
 
Did you buy it new? Did you return to the store that sold it and show them.

I bought it online and had it shipped to my state. Because I live in the Soviet Union err I mean the Peoples Empire of New York State it is a huge pain in the butt for me to ship it back.

Honestly I pretty much send all my revolvers to an actual smith to get sorted. Last one had misaligned barrel, hammer hitting the frame, crane issues.
I shoot the snot out of my revolvers, and when Im not at the range i dry fire them a lot.

I sent handguns to smith and wesson twice before becasue they had issues and twice they told me that it is "within spec".

It is easier for me to pay a person who knows what they are doing to fix it right the first time.

I'll typically disassemble a new smith out of the box simply because they typically come from the factory bone dry. That is if there are no obvious issues prior. While smith revolvers aren't that hard to work on, it's not like disassembling a striker fire semiauto where it's fairly benign to break down to the major components and also detailed in the user manual.

Hard to imagine anyone from customer service recommending someone disassemble a brand new just taken out of the box revolver, including removing the sideplate and internals. For someone who has familiarity doing so, no big deal. I can think of a whole slew of things that a novice could do that would end up messing up a revolver.
 
This would be pathetic for a regular production revolver, but for a Performance Center offering it's just ridiculous. Someone higher up needs to see this and have it made clear that these pictures are out on the internet.
 
It's under warranty and there is no way in hell that having all those metal shavings is normal. There clearly is an issue with the revolver and I would call smith wesson and chew them out and get them to replace it asap. They will do it or at least they will check it out and replace whatever is wrong or possibly just send you a new one. That's unacceptable. That's all that needs to be said to them period.
