Hello all. I'm new to posting stuff on forums. I recently traded in my Shield .40 for a 9mm Shield due to my primary weapon at work being a Glock 17 which is 9mm and I want my back up weapon to match my primary's ammo. I'll try to keep the following list of events in order to avoid confusion to what had happened.

I purchased my new Shield 9mm and brought it home to give it a thorough cleaning. That same afternoon I load up the car to head to the range and put my new Shield through a little torture test so I don't encounter any weapon failure's during my qualification and gain a little trust in my new gun. With me I brought along 450 rounds of various ammunition. Remington, American Eagle, certified reloads, Winchester, Speer, Hornady Critical Defense and Hornady Critical Duty +P (which I would shoot last to ensure the gun can more than handle it).

Get to the range and set up an array of random targets. Load up my weapon with the standard Remington fmj rounds. Fire my first round and hit my mark, wow this thing beautiful (I'm thinking in my head). Fire my second round and hit my mark again but this time it felt a little funny hmmm it's jammed. The slide is stuck all the way to the rear. There was zero room for any movement.I'm thinking to myself that I'm sure it's nothing and probably just a fluke... I release my mag and begin trying to clear the malfunction. No success. I had to bang the barrel on the range table while also wiggling the slide and finally it popped back into battery. I fire my third round, same exact problem. I swapped out my ammunition and fired a fourth round with no problems. Fired a fifth round same problem. Sixth round same problem. Seventh round same problem. I'M DONE.

I brought the gun back to where I purchased it (rimes with Cabelas) and they tried to act like they knew what the problem was and I kind of wen't off on them explaining the application in which this gun is going to be used and that I wan't them to send it back to Smith and Wesson with out another word.

5 weeks later I receive my gun with a note that reads "slide repaired passed range test" and head back out to the range. Same scenario as before. I'm all excited to shoot my remaining 400 ish rounds through this bad boy and restore my faith in Smith and Wesson. Fire an entire magazine with no problem's. Reload fire again and boom! Same thing as before omg... I was able to fire all the 400 ish rounds I brought and encountered roughly 100 failures with all of them being the same with the slide locking all the way to the rear and having to bang on the barrel to get it go back into battery.

Instead of dealing with the jackoff's at Cabelas again I went directly to Smith and they arranged a shipping label for me and I shipped my gun back to the factory for the second time. I shipped it on Monday 6/13 so I haven't received it back yet but when I do I'll keep everyone posted! Please share your thoughts with me on this... Thanks!

Only have had my Shield (PC 9) a short time but so far with 100+ rounds fired it has been perfect. Knock on wood that continues. But i have 2500+ rounds thru my other MP 9's with zero issues as well

Sorry, I have a Shield 9 and 40 and they have been flawless out of the box. They are both accurate and reliable with any kind of ammo I feed them. Sorry you had trouble out of the gate, hope it gets squared away!

I have a shield and so do several of my friends. They all have functioned flawlessly. I am retired from the PD and this is my primary gun. When one of my best friends asked if I would recommend a 9mm shield I enthusiastically said yes.

But....

We went to the range with several kinds of factory ammo and some reloads. My friend is a maticulous reloader and I have never seen him have a problem. He loaded the magazine with factory ammo and his 9mm Shield did exactly what you described. It continued to malfunction just as you said with all kinds of ammo. We brought it back to the gunshop with the slide still stuck in the rear position.

Our friend at the gunshop sent it back to S&W and we are waiting to hear. Our friend said he has sold hundreds of Shields with no issues.

Please post if you hear something before we do.

My wife had the exact same issue on her shield. 5 rounds in boom STUCK HARD. Was able to get it back into battery, it felt sticky manipulating the slide. Filed a few rounds no issue. Took home clean, back to the range (different day) zero issue. Didn't have one while she had it. She traded for a G19 G4 at a gun show. I have had zero issue like that with my Shield 9 CT bought same day.

I don't know what the problem is, but I assure you it has nothing to do with the firearm needing a cleaning.

A video of this problem might help us to see what is happening.

I hope S&W gets it fixed.

You did the right thing......

Sending it to S&W was the right thing to do. Heck with retailers unless they will trade for another. They take it to the back and let it sit and a couple of weeks later say it's fixed.

ANYWAY:

I did have trouble with a Shield and the factory gave me a new barrel. The second part of the problem concerned reloads that I made with bullets that had a 'small ball' profile (that I didn't want) so now things are fine. It's a dream gun but bugs can turn that dream into a nightmare. I was feeling for a while that I couldn't trust any of my SD pistols. I took them all to the range today and had zero malfunctions.:)

Another no place to vote here. No issues with my Shield either. Over 500 rounds through my Shield and no problems what so ever.

Mine has a born on date of 11-17-2015
