Forgive the CNN posting, it is up to date with a number of videos embedded.
I haven't watched much.
At least 6 killed in Florida bridge collapse - CNN
What a mess.
Munilla and Figg the builders, Louis Berger engineering, BDI out of CO structural testing and BCR the riggers I'm sure are all scrambling for damage control.
Meanwhile rescue has turned into recovery.
A case of too much oversight? Local, county and state level in addition to a publicly funded university may have missed the obvious. Not to mention the all to real possibility of graft at multiple levels.
In any case I'm disgusted at the outcome of such a preventable occurrence and can only hope that necks get stretched when the dust settles.

My thoughts and prayers with the victims and their loved ones

a tragic incident.

the only way to prevent further incidents like that is to ban all foot bridges.
they're dangerous.
if it saves one life a ban would be worth it.
repeal any and all foot bridge amendments.
nobody needs a foot bridge.

Here in San Antonio there will soon be a similar major project beginning to build a footbridge across a very busy parkway/city street (Wurzbach Parkway). The purpose is not for people (although they will be able use it) but for wildlife. The parkway runs through a large wooded public park with many deer on both sides, and of course, the lives of deer matter. I suppose the city will hold training classes for deer in how to use the bridge. And the taxpayers will pay the $23 Million dollar bill. Yes, $23 Million for a deer bridge. I hope it doesn't collapse the same way.

There were some mentions that the Florida bridge was made of something called "Self-cleaning Concrete". I had to look it up to find out what it was. What I found was that SCC contains Titanium Dioxide, which is said to act as a catalyst (in conjunction with sunlight) to react with dirt on the concrete surface to somehow destroy it. Then the concrete stays nice and white and clean-looking (Titanium Dioxide is a pigment used in white paint). It's an Italian invention. Maybe it also weakened the concrete???

I suspect many lawyers will become multi-millionaires as a result of the bridge collapse. I sure wouldn't want to be one of those involved in any way with its design and construction.

In Western Canada they’ve had those for decades. Seem to be working for the intended purpose. Of course, in those parts wildlife likely outnumbers people.

Their construction seems safe, more reminiscent of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall than that footbridge suspended on some strings.

Yes, that is generally the same deer bridge design that will be used here. Wurzbach Parkway in that area is a six-lane divided highway with a median strip, somewhat like that shown. But I think the bridge will be a single span arch without a center support according to the design sketches I have seen instead of two tunnels. And it will also be vegetated. There are deer in wooded areas all over San Antonio, even in largely residential areas. Yet I don't see many deer carcasses by roadsides. I think that the city deer have become smart enough to avoid getting into traffic.

I remember some years ago when a deer wandered into a supermarket in a strip center not far from my home and did a lot of damage. The police had to come and shoot it.

Couldn't they have built a plain ole steel bridge for a million? May only have weighed 10 tons.

Slightly off topic but since you brought up wildlife bridges...

Did you hear about the blonde that went to the Town fathers and suggested that they should move the deer crossing signs somewhere else because so many deer were getting hit there......

...my question is how do you let someone drive under a suspension bridge when the tower and suspension cables are not in place...

...here's a photo and video of what the completed suspension bridge was to look like...

Worked 33 years in Heavy Construction.

Just shove a bridge section in place and remove the false work and jacks, because...........
we have a road to OPEN !!

Really !!

No cable stressing, Rebar build up or cement to be poured and cured for 4-5 days ? !
Did you notice the rebar sticking out of the one bulkhead ?
Did they use non-spec "Hard Bolts on the structural Iron?

Did they want to finish early to get a bonus ?
Just wondering if this was a non-Union contractor?

Way too many errors made on this job.

This should have NEVER HAPPENED !!

I think if the truth was to be told to the public they would never drive under or over a bridge or overpass again. All across this great country the bridges and overpasses are in serious decline and some are just an accident waiting to happen...

No kidding, it's a serious problem and the states and cities do not have the funding to shore up or replace the really dangerous ones.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

The video above makes more clear the statement made that the bridge was to supply study and conversational areas for the FIU students. I couldn't quite understand the meaning of that. I wonder how much it cost to make that video?

Obviously a battalion of "trial lawyers" will force a very thorough examination of exactly what happened. There is blood in the water.

Perhaps a ban on concrete would be appropriate.....

Only the "new and improved SELF CLEANING" concrete!

I "demand" answers and regulations! I do not feel safe going outside anymore, we must pass a Bill!

Let the pointing begin!
