Bridge Collapse in Miami, FL

A tragedy, but will anyone be held responsible?
For sure the liability will be put upon some of those involved by the legal teams being assembled, and insurance settlements will protect the culpable. Not much else will happen, but hopefully a lesson is learned by the Civil/Structural community, to avoid a repeat.

It seems that FIU inserted itself into the details of the bridge's structural design and also the management of the construction project. That is never a smart thing to do, as, if so, they will certainly end up among the defendants.

Found this this morning. After the shooting I thought things couldn't get any worse for government. Looks like I was mistaken. Is anybody minding the store???

FDOT warned about FIU bridge cracking 2 days before fatal collapse - but didn't hear voicemail - abcactionnews.com WFTS-TV

So some millennial junior engineer with poor verbal communication skills leaves a single voicemail on someone’s landline and thinks that is sufficient? Why the heck didn’t they immediately order a complete safety inspection that would have at least led to some emergency shoring and buttressing that may have averted tragedy? Better yet, when some experienced engineers looked at the condition, they may have closed 8th Street. Monday morning quarterbacking, I know, but the sheer ineptitude I see staggers me.

The way I read it is that the person with the authority was away "on assignment". Apparently, FDOT does not give it's folks cell phones, so a message was left. The guy leaving the message had no authority to do ANYTHING. Now, if it turns out his engineering judgment on the cracks was wrong, then he is going to be in employment difficulties. If the bridge failed in some other way that was not detectable, he's off the hook.

For me, the real issue is FIU stress testing a bridge over an active street. Nope. nope. Nope.

Lucky for the bigwigs at MCM that they don't live in China. They execute contractors after infrastructure they built collapses and kills citizens.

In reading the article yesterday the "Figg" outfit said
"nothing like this has ever happen in our past".

Some of you coastal Virginians can help my memory here. Wasn't "Figg" the outfit that built a Norfolk bridge a few years ago that COLLAPSED?!?

Jordan bridge in Chesapeake, a section fell on the railroad tracks during construction.

**WAIT !! WHAT ?!? DWalt, are you saying school administrators may lack expertise in heavy construction of bridges ?? My goodness;...that situation might put the lives of students at risk, and surely they know the best way to protect.....ahh never mind, lost my train of thought.

More likely thinking, "HOLY C***, that could have been me!"

They were doing the smart thing, which was getting out of the way of the tide of incoming emergency vehicles. Anyone who has watched more than ten seconds of cable news would understand that there were going to be about 100 police cars, ambulances, and fire engines flooding into that area.

Don't you just love the folks who drive off thinking. "Great, now I have to take 54th that will make me late."
