Bring back the 547!

A revolver that ejects rimless cartridges would sell like hotcakes in this semi-auto era. My 547 from 1983 has been my favorite shooter from the day I brought it home. I understand that it was a costly gun to manufacture but if Charter can do it than S&W certainly can.

Not only 9mm but it would also be wise to chamber one for .45 ACP. So what does Smith do? They discontinue the 625. Makes no sense. The world is changing. Revolver manufacturers need to change with it or get left in the dust.

I would love to find a 547 3". I agree, I think they're very cool. Since they are hard to find, I would like to see it brought back.

A .45 would be interesting as well, but that would involve an N frame. A bulldog with 2.5/3" barrel in addition to 4" would be very cool.

That extraction system was expensive to manufacture! In the current wants of the shooting world AND for profits this is about as likely to happen as having pigs fly!!

I have one and I like it. Doubt it will ever come back. As another poster said this thread they are very expensive to build,

My son a shooter and also a machinist foreman and CNC programmer at a large shop has told me its a expensive build and will never come back.

Charter Arms has a nice little extractor for rimless cartridges. If they can do it Smith could do it.

True…..but manufacturers do bring things back when fads change and they may again be popular. And it does seem like in this world of plastic semi auto pistols that a revolver chambered in a caliber that will also work in somebody’s other plastic pistols in the safe may actually sell. Heck, I’d buy a new 547.

I have a performance center 625 and it is superb.

I also have a Ruger 2 3/4” Speed Six, a 2” Rossi 905 and a 3” RIA AL9.0, all in 9mm. The Speed six is great, the Rossi 905 hasn’t been great for reliability, and the AL9.0 had a great deal of promise and would be great if it didn’t eject hard, but as is…well no.

In short, I’d still buy a 547 or a 629 in a heart beat if S&W would make one. Expensive? Sure. But probably not much more than a Speed Six (if/when you can find one), or getting a 905 *and* an AL9.0 in search of a decent 9mm revolver.

Bringing back the unique, but antiquated 547 wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. The complicated mechanism would be expensive to produce and prone to breakage. When you think about it, S&W had invented the simplest way of shooting rimless cartridges out a revolver in 1917. Between head spacing and moonclips, they created a beautifully simple design for doing that, which made the 547 a solution to a problem that didn't exist.

I have had 547s and experienced no problems. Have never seen a broken 547. What broke? Any pics?

My solution was to buy the Charter Bulldog in 45 Colt. Nice companion for my Henry Sidegate; compact and reasonably light weight and not expensive. Then sent it off to Charter for a fitting of crane and cylinder assembly from their 45acp Pitbull. Got it back just before the warm spell a couple of weeks ago. Had it out to the backyard range and WOW! Its everything I’d hoped for. Brand new gun, both calibers for less than $550 out of pocket. Took a few weeks to turnaround waiting on them to do a Pitbull run for parts. Hope the mods don’t insist that I change my jf… moniker. But my little M38 has a new big brother just in my carry battery!

That's a great idea, I would not have thought of doing. I went back and forth which one to buy - Bulldog XL in .45 Colt, or Pitbull in .45 ACP. I went with the Pitbull because I reload .45 ACP. I'll keep that in mind that I could send it to CA and get a .45 Colt yoke and cylinder fitted. I love my Pitbull. It's the perfect truck gun for me.

If you can get a 2.5" Pitbull in .45 ACP why would you go to the trouble of having the .45 Colt Bulldog converted to .45 ACP? Is it for the larger frame?

Hey I also have a Ruger 2 3/4” Speed Six in 9mm, a 2” Taurus 905 and the 3” RIA AL9.0! Recently added a 5" Chiappa Rhino. Now that's a great shooter! It's the only revolver I own that can go head to head with my 4" 547. I'm not a great shooter but great guns make my accuracy fairly respectable and that 547 is just dead on. Adjustable rear sights are overrated. I'll take a good trough rear sight any day of the week.

Maybe Colt’s will develop one and offer it in a King Cobra. They seem to be reviving discontinued models as if they realize some of us still like revolvers.

I had a 4" 547 square butt & three 940s & sold them like a fool BUT for quite a profit
The extractor mechanism of the 547 used beryllium copper for the extractor detents & used to be available @ Numbrich
I never had any stuck cases of any kind with the 547 it just worked
I too would love to find a 3" round butt to use for concealed carry
