Broccoli caused it

Having been raised in an English kitchen, where nothing was wasted, I learned to try everything that was set before me.

I then hit these shores and discovered flavor.

I can't imagine going through life ordering from a one page menu.

Celery in any form is not fit for man nor beast and boiled Okra is running a close second. Other than those 2 things I guess I can make a meal out of anything. Larry

In the early 90's when divorced, I met and dated a lady from Mobile AL. She had me eating fried okra in short order. Do not know why I waited so long to try it.

Boiled okra reminds me of having a bad cold, and the phlegm runs down your throat. What amazes me is the very same okra, sliced, breaded with cornmeal, and then fried crisp is a delight to eat.

The stalks of the broccoli can be prepared to make an excellent dish:

Peal the stalks then slice thin.
Sauté slices in butter until nicely caramelized, salt and pepper to taste and you'll love broccoli.

Truely great dish. Try it.

...Broccoli...Liver and Onions...See, it's because of broccoli and liver and onions that I got the attitude, I don't want to, and you can't make me...

Maybe it is old age that turned me into a old curmudgeon instead of the broccoli...:confused:WuzzFuzz

If'n that's yer story..Stick to it!

Now, I totally agree on Okra!

Broccoli as well as Brussels sprouts and cauliflower can be prepared so it is excellent.

Butter is the main thing these veggies need.

Steam broccoli and drizzle with salted butter.

Saute slices of cauliflower in butter.

Bake or sauté Brussels sprouts with butter and salt then drizzle with good balsamic vinegar (good balsamic vinegar is thick and syrupy: $50+ per pint).

You'll notice that the secret is butter.

Butter adds to quality of life, even though it may not lengthen life.

Tell some people you hate green peppers and they will bombard you with "great" recipes for them. What a great recipe forr something? simply state you hate it. Works better than simply asking how to cook it.

Hey, there are plenty of great things to eat in my world. My momma told me when I grew up I could eat whatever I wanted. Why should I keep trying to put something I hate on my plate. There are probably a lot of great recipes for beetles to if you ask around. I don't.

My steak is fine with some spud and corn. A green salad before hand. If the cow ate some broccoli or Brussel sprouts at some time, thats close enough for me.

Cream of Broccoli soup is wonderful with a warm slice of ho-made bread and a pad or two of butter!

I like it but on the rare occasions that my wife makes it usually ends up with me and the dog being dispatched to the man cave for the rest of the day.

I'm a super picky eater and at this point, about ready for social security, I can say I don't hate broccoli anymore. Years of eating it with shrimp at a great Chinese restaurant got me past the hating it to the point I tolerate it. I eat a lot of it, because it helps fill me up, and it's pretty cheap, and it's supposed to be good for me. I can't tolerate any other green vegetable but peas and lettuce. Some of my real hates are cauliflower and green beans. And cooked carrots. Raw are fine, in chinese food, they are usually not really cooked and I can tolerate them, but cooked, they are just revolting.

My childhood traumas, imagined and real, mostly involved being forced to eat all the stuff I found repulsive. My grandmother used to come over to babysit me and my sister, and she would make, from scratch, chicken and egg noodles. I don't like poultry, period, and her forcing me to eat it over and over again has made just the sight of wide egg noodles mildly freak me out. I've had guns aimed at my face by crazed neighbors and that didn't upset me nearly as much as the last time I saw a plate of those wide egg noodles. I know it's crazy, but it's true. I'm kind of glad she passed away as my rage at being forced to eat that **** once a week was growing, just like I was, and a couple of weeks before she began her downward health spiral, I began to think about dumping them on her head, and telling her, "No! You eat it!". Except for a couple of times I've eaten fried chicken, I haven't eaten any other chicken in over 50 years.

Sorry fellas, but I like all of the above. It took years to develop recipes and cooking methods (not just drowned in cheese or butter) to get to that point, but I have arrived! Even my wife and kids have embraced (most of) them. I suggest you experiment a bit before you pooh-pooh them.
This Italian proudly carries the Broccoli flag. Viva Broccoli!

My thoughts exactly. Chicken livers with onions and eggs may be my favorite meal.

The only vegetable I don't like is zucchini. Pretty sure we can blame the Italians for that one too. Although I think it is the preperation, slimy and gooey. A little better on the grill, and a lot better sliced and fried with breadcrumbs like eggplant.

This is true. I've found the issue is that the florets and the stalks cook differently. They need to be seperated. The florets are delicate the stocks are tough.

Sometimes I will cut the florets off with scissors into a salad or Mac and cheese. The stocks cook like carrots.

There are a few things that I refuse to eat, but not many. I tell folks I like any food that the name starts with "A". A piece of chicken, a slice of pie, a bowl of soup......... You get the drift.

I tried beef lungs one time, just to be polite, but never again, and chitlins, ugh!

Have a blessed day,

Leon

When I was a young-un I was forced to eat peas once. Once. Immediate discharge of stomach contents ensued. Never again was I made to eat vile stuff such as peas, lima beans, liver or oatmeal

Omnivorous plantigrade.

That is (besides my temper, some folks tell me :D) my common trait with bears.

Edit. Before someone asks. Yes, I can also eat raw salmon.:D

My Grandmother said "you will sit there until you eat it!"
There is NOT one type of food I will not eat because of her!
There probably IS food out there that is absolutely horrendous, but so far I have not found it and I am certainly NOT searching for it.

I always thought cheese sauce was the ultimate additive for vegetables. Of course, as something that is enjoyable there will be personages that will find something wrong with it.

My Grandmother said "you will sit there until you eat it!"

My parents had a variation on this: "If you don't eat it now, you will get it for the next meal." A couple of times of having liver and onions for breakfast convinced me that it's better to get it over with at dinner, than to start the day with it.

When I say I don't like liver, I mean beef liver...I actually like fried chicken livers.
