SW40VE , what causes broken extractors. Mine broke at about 3000 rounds, now 3655 rounds later, it is broken again...
Can these be bought and replaced easily at home? or does it have to go back to S&W again?
Probably metal fatigue. I got one from Numrich. Not at all difficult to replace if you can strip the slide. If Numrich doesn't have one, Try S&W, Brownells or MidwayUSA.
Rather than keep replacing the extractor so often, why not call S&W and tell them it has failed again and only 3000 rounds or so after the first time it failed? They will probably have you send it back but this time the can look it over knowing there is a problem that causes premature failure.
if you have oil or lub on the extractor it could be causing it to no grip the casing right or if it was not installed correctly. I heard somewhere, the 40ve needs some adjusting with tension to work properly. If you send it back, don't send it w/ a magazine. they will send you back the mag they used to test with. I would just let them know and send it in if you can go w/o it for a couple of weeks.
I bought my 40ve slightly used for 2 peanuts and a quarter so I do my own work but if you got yours new then by all means send it back to the good folks at S&W. They know exactly what their doing and it will be free of charge.
