Bought an unfired 544 earlier this year. Have put about 5-600 rds through it. Pulled it out of safe to take to range tomorrow and checked the action-no resistance to cock in single action.
Pulled grips and saw mainspring was sheared about an inch down from hammer hooks. After pulling it from gun noticed a "ridge" running most of the length of the MS. Do you think this is what caused the premature failure? Bad casting of part? Looks like the break is right on the ridge. Kind of weird. ridge.jpgbreak.jpgbreak 2.jpg

The ridge is some sort of gimmick sold to imply you can do an action job just by swapping springs.

The break? Stuff happens. As a Police Armorer, I was blessed to see numerous, odd, problems. I probably replaced about a dozen mainsprings in the 9 years I was in LE.

Get a factory mainspring. They are the gold standard.

Something wet wrong when that spring was made. The offset line isn't normal plus I have seen flaws in steel.

As Stawhat said stuff like a defective spring happens. Replace it knowing that the odds of it ever happening to you again a in the winning the lottery range.
