Years ago I had a S&W 22A with an inexpensive red dot sight on it. Great shooter but just wasn't what we wanted at the time, so we let it go. Browsing through the LGS the other day and there was a 7" 22A on the shelf for $200. I couldn't help but feel the time was right this time around and picked up.

After a good cleaning and a trip to the range, I can see letting the first one go was a big mistake, a situation that is now resolved. A box of S&B and a partial box of CCI Stinger's I had setting around were 100% reliable and accurate out of her. The Stinger's were interesting as they threw a pretty good fireball out the front.

Great trigger also, breaking at about 2lbs. I gave S&W a call to check if this gun was part of a recall on the 22A's, and it wasn't. Built in September of 1999 and as luck would have it, they still had some of the recoil spacers available and were happy to send me some. Gotta love S&W CS.

Some people don't like the 22A from S&W. They hate the mag release. Personally I think they are awesome. I have a Simmons scope on 1 of the 2 that I own. I have been able to put it on paper at 100 yards. Just a fun shooting gun.

Yeah, the mag release is a bit different, but this isn't a carry pistol where speed when changing mags is important. The smooth action and accuracy more than make up for that minor issue. After I made a couple sight adjustments, she was a one-hole shooter. I'm thinking of a red dot in the near future.

The one I own is a reliable and very accurate pistol. My father bought it for headshots on grouse, and it served it's purpose well. It carries well enough to be a good field gun, and it's accurate enough to be a target gun. It may not be the prettiest gun, but I would rather drag it through the bushes than my 18-3.
