Smith is looking great!
I have a 63-3 that will need similar work before giving it to our Granddaughter.
Based on your photos are you showing us that the hand movement you used to get the work done was in ... three axes? ;)

To properly refinish your gun and to remove that deep scratch you have on the frame you need to use the brown pads. The brown pads remove deep scratches and puts Uniform brush finish on the gun like the factory does. You can use the gray pads after to soften and blend the finish in. A wipe down with vinegar will speed up the pacification process if you let it sit for a day or two to achieve that factory finish.

Still looking for available grey pads, guess I'll order some. Might try the brown method too for the deep areas on mine.

What exactly is meant by the "pacification process" using weak acid like vinegar?

Pacification is done during manufacturing and will continue to repeat itself if the finish is altered in any way .It is a very fine oxidation film the further protect the stainless steel. You cant notice it unless it has been removed ,then it doesn't look quite right.

The Gray pads are available at Grainger . You can buy one piece for $1.99. if not in stock they'll order it and you pick up the next day.

Nice work! Your 686 looks much better! I also appreciate the trio of Gransfors Bruk axes. I have the small forest axe but haven’t had the opportunity to use it yet.
