Buck n' Slug Day...

I run full power 9 pellet 00 in my Wingmaster. I've tried low recoil 00 and know it's good stuff. Problem is I'll take the beating since I'm just a brain-dead grunt. ;) Actually, I like the idea of the pellets still having a lot of energy left when they reach the spine. With a handgun the idea of hitting the spine is problematic. Not so with a shotgun. If I only have five shots I want them hitting as hard as possible. I'm thinking of trying short magnum 00 in the future

As for slugs, when I tested X12RS15 (Win. 2 3/4" 1 oz. foster slug), which is a hot load, the extra velocity promotes expansion and thus the slug stops quicker than it would otherwise. That load will stop at 15" in Perma-Gel. It's an overpenetrator, but not by much. Oh, FWIW the recovered diameter was 1.1" or so.

I like the Flight control stuff. Within the confines of my home, I feel that it's unnecessary. I do keep the FC stuff handy in case I want buckshot outside the home where ranges may be extended, or stray pellets are a no-no.

Last year I was staking out my mother-in-law's garden for woodchucks. The first coyote I ever saw in the wild came in at 15 yds. (the longest shot in my house) and I hit the SOB three times with a 3" 1 5/8 oz. loads of #6 shot. Well, I'm sure I killed him but he got away. There's a lesson for you "I use #6 shot for home defense" guys. Next time, wombat or dog, they're getting nailed with Flite Control 00.

Cool thread you started, Bob.

On a semiauto like a Bennelli I like a 20" barrel, but on an 870 I prefer an 18" barrel.

I did use a short barreled [ barrel just a little longer than the standard mag tube] 870 for a work gun for many years.
It was very handy for indoor use.

I do like a magazine extention, and a SureFire fore end light is a good idea.

I like a side saddle, and a good quality buttstock shell carrier.

Out to 50 yards I can do pretty good with slugs with the bead.

However, at 75 and at 100 yards rifle type "iron sights" are necessary IMHO.

A few months ago I did some testing with 2 different 870's at 25, 50 and 100 yards that reconfirmed this.

The one thing that I do not like is a pistol grip only shotgun...

Unless is is carried primarily as a door breaching tool.

"The one thing that I do not like is a pistol grip only shotgun..."....yea...I remember the day you called me up saying that new Bennelli Super 90 with the pistol grip stock was the first gun that ever brought tears to your eyes... Ray's as I recall switched out stocks for you and you lived happily ever after....

Flop...I just keep one kind of shell in a gun as when the SHTF you are going to use what is in the gun... I had to grab that Mossberg that is seen in the last picture, with the guy shooting skeet, one time and run out of the house on a dog that had just killed one of my chickens. It was about a 35 yard shot on a running dog that was squeezing under my front gate to freedom... One round of Winchester Super-X..caught him with at least one pellet has he let out a yelp and made it under the gate...and never came back. There were two holes in the gate... That was in the mid-1980s...when I visited the place in 2006 they had just torn the house down...but the two holes were still in the gate... Would have loved to have that Flight Control back then... On the bright side I didn't have to bury anything...

Bob, I was actually refering to a shotgun with a pistol grip and no shoulder stock...

But I do remember that Benelli. The combo of the pistol grip and the lines of the shoulder stock made it almost as painful for the shooter as the shootee.

Well at the least it did not fit me.

The BOD at the club who hosted this event agreed last night to run another one on Saturday June 19th...limit 30 shooters, of which over half the slots are spoken for.

If anyone is interested one does not have to be a member of Major Waldon Sportsmen's Assoc. Major Waldron's Sportsmen's Assn. The cost is $20.00 for members and $25 for non. The club is in Barrington, NH about 20 minutes north of Portsmouth. You can email me at [email protected] for more information.
