I'm considering the purchase of a model 10 at Buds, one of their police turn-ins, and wonder what the experience has been from others who have bought these guns. Also, are these guns "reconditioned" or at least checked by a gunsmith? I'm looking for a gun to use as a loaner but it needs to be dependable.

I was just there yesterday and they had alot of them in the display cases. Several had visible rust all over them. Most grips were wood replacements that looked somewhat like original service stocks, while some had rubber grips, and few had the original stocks. Overall the description on the website is pretty accurate but they definitely picked two of the nicer ones for the photos.

I can't speak to this particular gun, but my FFL is on Bud's "Preferred Dealer" list. This FFL buys some of his personal guns from Bud's, because they seem to have some of the harder to find S&W products in stock more often than other outlets.

I've bought 3 guns from Bud's. Communications is mediocre, shipping time is reasonable, but not fast. They use UPS 2nd day, but it might take a day or 3 to get the gun into shipment. They often times have very very good prices. I've found cheaper places for specific guns other times but overall Bud's prices ain't bad. One tip though, check to see if Bud has the model you're looking for auction on GunBroker. Often times he cuts his own price by $20-$40.

Hit and miss on the finish, but most are fairly tight from what I've read. Carried a lot and shot a little. I believe these also went back to S&W to be inspected before bud's got them.

My experiences with Bud's were both positive.

I got a 3" model 10 from the first batch. It had some surface rust and some of the blueing was rubbed off. But it cleaned up excellent - IMHO. It is super tight and super accurate. The replacement wood grips were wider than the standard and I do not like or use them.

I would buy another one at the $269 price in a heartbeat if I needed one. In fact, I almost bought a second one this week before they were gone, but I'm saving up for a model 60 and do not need another K frame.

Here's a couple 'before' pics - right after I picked it up. It looks much nicer now but I don't have any current pics.

Edit:Not sure if it's true, but I heard they were returned to S&W for trade-in with the firing pins removed, S&W inspected and resold them, and Bud's paid somebody to reinstall brand new firing pins. I know my firing pin looks brand new.

At least on one deal regarding police trade-ins, they wouldn't cherry pick, even for a markup on the price. Nonetheless, a very reputable place to shop.

I ordered a 3" square butt from Bud's on Friday - it arrived at my FFL late today. Will be ready for pick up tomorrow.

I'll post a condition report and try to get some pictures up afterwards.

I got one of the 4'' model 10's from his last batch and it was more worn than his description but it has tight lock-up and shoots great...i feel it was well worth the price. I just got a model 64 from "SOSSdirect" on GB for $209 and it is spectacular.....very little wear, and looks like it was barely ever fired. Check out the "Cheap model 64" thread on here and there's some pictures up of what people received. He also had some 4" model 10's for $199, not sure if any are left.

Here's the link to some model 10's...

Steve, I think that I have 4 guns from them (or more) I got a 10-8 Aussie Police gun from them the last time around. It needed cosmetics, but was mechanically sound. Wood grips, were almost like new. I would buy a used gun from them, over anyone else if they had the item I was looking for. They state that they are guaranteed for function (10's) Usually quick ship. I ordered a gun on a Thursday morning at 5 am, and picked it up at my F.F.L. the next day at 6pm. Did not pay extra for rush. Bob

i don't know why, but several of the local ffl's in my area have signs posted that they won't accept guns from bud's.

M3, pretty darn nice for before pics! My 10-8 4" cleaned up well, and received minor cosmetics. Glad I got it! Bob

I got one a couple of months back. Outside showed a lot of holster wear but it looked liked it had hardly ever been fired. Great shooter for the price and Bud's has always been easy to work with.

Ozark, that is certainly nothing to be ashamed of!! Mine looked worse than that, But looks good now after some cosmetics. WELCOME to the Forum! Bob

Hmmm, that's interesting. I know that if you have a problem with one of Bud's guns and you've accepted delivery, the problems on you. Their policy is for you to inspect the gun thoroughly before you fill out any paperwork. You effectively refuse the gun. I'd imagine that might cause problems for the receiving FFL. Although, they have your gun, Bud has your money and you ain't got nothin'.

There's a pawn shop the next town over from me that loves doing transfers from Buds.

I guess, for me, the bottom line is I want to inspect any gun I purchase before handing over the money so I'll take a pass on Buds and stick with my local dealers. Sooner or later what I'm looking for will turn up. Thanks for the replies.

Steve, you never know when a gem will show up! I saw some nice Smiths in Cabelas today, and reasonably priced. (Dundee Mi) A gunshop near me has had some nice stuff lately too. I was looking for a k frame .357 since Feb. and finally found what I wanted in late Nov. I personally enjoy THE HUNT! Bob

The brick and mortar dealers hate places like Bud's because Bud's undercuts them on price big time! Why should they be satisfied with a $25 transfer fee when they can sell you the gun at a profit three or four times as much.

i understand that, but one of the places is a fellow that JUST does transfers and accepting shipped firearms and only charges $20 no matter what the transaction is. he maintains no stock and mainly does this as a service to the local shooting community!

EDIT-I just checked his site, and it says he won't accept from buds or cheaper than dirt "because they keep him on the phone for hours to receive one gun" apparently it's a shipping and receiving problem.

Can't speak as to Bud's, at least not until my M10 3" I ordered from them the other day shows up--but I do know what police and security Model 10s generally are like. Good project guns: the ones I have seen have been older pre-Model 10s from the early 1950s with a LOT of carry miles on them, and enough banging on doorways to make right side grip panels noticeably battered. The backstraps and top rear of the frames are usually nicely browned and very slightly pitted from exposure to the elements and they have about 80% blue remaining. Plus miscellaneous nicks and dings.

The good news is that they were usually minimally maintained, infrequently fired with standard velocity factory loads, and somewhat regularly inspected and cleaned. Best of all, regulations forbade people from taking off the side plates and screwing around with the actions to "improve" them. Bores, lockup and timing have usually been fine. The worst I have found inside has been 50 years worth of dried grease and dirt.

I usually do a good cleaning, fit up a spring kit, smooth the grooved triggers, and replace the stocks. That done I have a dandy utility gun of excellent quality that fires a great cartridge and will outshoot almost anything else all day long. Best bang for the buck around. The more I shoot them the more respect I have for the people who built them and carried them. Not fancy, but better guns were never made.
