Gentlemen, et al,
Bought my 629-6 in .44mag ( LOVE that gun) specifically for critter protection while fly fishing in NW Wyoming. I'm fairly new to this forum and also to the technics of ammunition. I need to know just what ammo/bullet/load should I use for that purpose? I need to know that in the event of failure of my pepper/bear spray, I will have a positive back-up.
Thanks in advance.

First of all, THANKS for the info so far. The links provided do have a whole lot of information - still a bit confusing though. I want to be able to kill a grizz without blowing up my gun with some super hot load. What would be a "safe" yet grizz lethal load for my gun?

None of these recommended loads are going to blow up your gun.

My opinion, and others will differ, is that you want the heaviest, non-expanding bullet your gun will handle. You want all the penetration you can get because the only way a .44 is going to be instantly 'lethal' is if you hit something in the central nervous system.
