I'm need to buy a bullet puller to separate 45 colt and 460 mag rounds in lead and copper jacket. I've seen the plastic impact hammer types and the press mounted collet type that pulls the bullets apart.

What type is the best for both lead and copper jacket bullets?

Is there enogh "bearing" surface on a 45 cal pistol bullet to engage the collet of the press mounted puller?

Thanks

I have both. The hammer type will do the job but your arm will get tired if you have to pull more than a few. I also have an RCBS collet type that works very well. It pulls the bullets form the tightest crimp with little effort. I screwed up and overcharges several hundred 357 mag rounds with Rainier plated bullets. The collet puller pulled them all in one evening and all but 1 or 2 the bullets were reusable. I recommend you get both. The hammer type for the occasional "oh-sh-t" while loading and the collet for the big jobs.

Good advice. I have an RCBS kinetic hammer and it works great for removing an occasional bullet, but I wouldn't want to have it be an all night thing.
