OK, still learning here. So how on earth do you guys SAVE money buying ammo online? If I buy a box of $20 ammo at Walmart, with my 6% sales tax it will be $21.20. How does anyone save on buying that same box online, as heavy as ammo is, it would probably cost 10 bucks to ship one box.

If Wal-Mart has the ammo you're looking for, it's unlikely you will beat their prices by shopping on-line, after shipping costs are factored in.
On the positive side for on-line buying, you'll generally have a much better selection of ammo to choose from. And the prices can be pretty good, especially when buying by the case.

It all depends on caliber and availability. WalMart doesn't sell Brown Bear, Silver Bear, Wolf, etc. Sometimes if you price shop and buy in bulk, it's cheaper to buy online. I bought 500 rounds of 9x18 Makarov ammo from AmmoToGo and it was cheaper than anything I had available within a 1 hour drive. It all just depends on the circumstances.

If I buy ammo online then I buy in a large bulk order...at least 2000rds. I will even try to get other people in on a group buy to help with the cost of freight.

But as MOD29 said...if Walmart has your ammo in stock, then but it from them as you probably won't get a better deal anywhere else, unless someone has a once in a bluemoon sale.

If I'm buying practice ammo OnLine then I buy a 1000 rnd case. Last case of .40S&W I bought cost $299 shipped free to my front door, which comes out to 0.299¢ per round. If I'm only buying a couple of boxes, I buy locally...shipping usually kills the good deal on small amounts.

Buy in bulk, AND look for discounted shipping. Right now USA Ammo is offering 1/2 off shipping costs. I bought 1k rounds and discovered it on the front porch swing within something like 3 or 4 days.

Their stuff is usually OK to shoot (in my experience, YMMV), and usually decently priced for factory load cartridges.

If you're buying one box of ammo, don't buy online. One box of ammo lasts me about ten minutes at the range. I buy at least five boxes at a time online (and usually much more than that).

If you shoot alot, especially the larger calibers, buying online in bulk saves a lot of money IMO.

Some current prices are from Cabella`s CCI/Blazer Aluminum case ( not reloadable)
500 rounds .45ACP $160 + $5 shipping.

500 rounds .38 Spec. LRN $130 + $5 shipping.

Georgia Arms New Brass Loads Shipped in GI Ammo Cans if over 500 rounds :

1000 .45ACP 230Gr. FMJ $390

1000 .38 Spec. LWC $270

100 .44 Spec. LRNFP $45.50 ( in plastic bags)

Over a certain price point at Georgia Arms you get free shipping, example , on the Eastern area if it`s over $500 free shipping.

Midway, Cheaper Then Dirt and Natchez also have periodic great deals.

I'm lucky that I live about 12 miles from a Bass Pro Shop where the ammo in plentiful and the prices are as low as Wally World. I usually get UMC in 9mm 250 count for $62.00 plus tax and Winchester 38 Special 100 count $39.00 plus the Governor. I have ordered it on line, but the shipping will kill your savings and some places still charge a Haz-Mat fee. I have also access to a Cabelas about 60 miles away, do not go there though.

Finding ammo at WalMart can be hit or miss and I just down right hate shopping there anyway. As others have posted many on line sellers have a much better selection, so the small amount more I pay is well worth it.

$62.00 for 250 rounds of 9mm is still a rip. That's $248 a case PLUS tax. Heck I very rarely pay more than $200 SHIPPED for a case of 9mm FMJ, mosty times LESS.

Shop around. Here's a start:

No one I know only buys one box of ammo at a time online. We buy in quantity--several boxes, half-case, full case. Shipping is reasonable when you do it that way.

Ammoseek.com gives you comparative prices all on one website, and then you can link to the individually websites. I never buy anything anywhere without going at least to this site to check around on current prices.

Normally the ammo I get online is of better quality then Walmart. To off set the cost of shipping normally I buy at least 250-500 rounds depending on what I am ordering. Some calibers are also cheaper to buy online like 9x18 locally is 30-40 dollars a box versus online 10bucks. There are only two shops with in 50 miles of me that sell the 9x18 so there prices are insane. I have also found that 357magnum is cheaper online box at the LGS 30bucks online is normal under 25.

$189 for 1000 rounds, 115 FMJ +$23 for shipping makes the cost per round .20 per round, which is cheaper than WalMart or anything else I know of in my local area. I think I got this pricing from Lucky Gunner but not sure as I made several bulk purchases within the last few weeks.

Ammoman.com has free shipping on all ammo purchases.

I used to buy ammo from Walmart. Every time I went into the store, I would buy a few boxes. They were the best prices around locally for target ammo.
However, once I realized that I could save money online, I started buying by the case. I could generally save 10-20%, didn't have to pay sales tax, and didn't have to keep checking WM every time I went to the store to see if WM had what I wanted in stock. Many times, the shipping is free for a case lot online.
Try Gunbroker for what you are looking for. See what it is going for and bid on it. You may have to bid several times, and it may take you a few weeks to win a case at the price you want to pay, but if you don't need it immediately, you can afford to wait.
