Brand new to forum. First post.

Have a few S&W and interested in learning more about them.

Have a Model 1917 in what I consider very good condition. Serial is 18XX. No serious alterations have been made to the gun, appears original finish. Grips were removed sometime in the past and a larger set of target grips installed. The lanyard ring was removed. I replaced lanyard ring and put on a set of reproduction grips.

Per S&W shipped Nov. 6, 1917 to Springfield, MA.

I am going to attempt to put a picture on the forum once I am able/allowed. Interested if anyone thinks original finish.

Also interested in finding an original set of grips and making sure the lanyard ring is correct or at least acceptable.

Bought from a friend of mine, his Grandfather had it. No known connection to military.

Also have a 32-20, 1905 fourth change, that per S&W was shipped May 12, 1926 to Mexico City. In good shape, very little light surface rust, bore is good. Shows little wear, but was carried in holster based on end of barrel. Checkering is still sharp and clean. No alterations or changes at all. Ended up in Louisville KY in the hands of an police officer in the 50's. Sold to a friend of his and later sold to me by his wife.

I just wonder where these pistols have been and what they went through? Based on their history they are in amazing shape.

Have a few others that are more modern, at least in the 50's and 60's.

Welcome to the Forum

Your Model 1917 is an early gun, it should have the hamer with concentric grooves on the sides. The correct grips would be smooth walnut with dished tops.

Sure does! Small concentric grooves. Appears to be machine marks but not really. To lighten hammer fall/reduce friction?

Grinps I have are reproductions, smooth.

The grooved hammers were used on about the first 12000 guns I think

Put a WTB on the classified page for the early dished top grips.

That is a nice looking 1917. I hope someone responds with a correct set of grips. Keep an eye on Fleabay, I have seen them listed there.

How about posting a picture of the 32/20 too.

Here is the 32-20.

Just learning about posting pictures. This is only the 2-4 I have taken.

Bore is a little rough, some old pits. Still shoots well. I feel in pretty good shape for 81 years old and having been shipped to Mexico City in 1926! I assume this was a hot load in 1926 and MC was a rough place!

Getting the hang of this.

Here is another of the 1917. Does this look like original finish or is that too much to ask on a picture? I feel it is original. Under grips is same, just a rougher metal finish.

Details are sharp, no rounding. Numbers and stamps are sharp. There is a logo/stamp on left top of frame, light but visable, appears to be a C and a S or a G and S with a - dividing in a circle. Circle is about 5/32 OD.

Is this an armory/arsenal stamp?
