i have always been a solid cabela's customer and thought of them as the "walmart" of sporting goods when it came to price. recently i went to their website to buy two items, they were both out of stock so i did a little shopping around. i ended up buying both the items elsewhere for lower prices, one much lower. i always thought volume selling equaled lower prices, guess i was mistaken. the gun library isn't the only department that is overpriced.

Cabela's

I bought my last three firearms at my local Cabela's for very good prices.
In fact I got a 351PD yesterday for $399 which is an excellent price. I guess it just depends on what you are looking at.

Gray2,
You got a SCREAMING deal on that M351. I would buy as many as were available for that price!

I agree that Cabela's prices are nothing to brag about. Ammo seems to be high almost all the time, unless they are running a special or have coupons. A friend picked up a Ruger Mark II Target model in real nice shape for $209 OTD, which was a pretty decent deal. Their used handguns have fairly competitive prices. They sell new mags at I guess the going price, saw a 7rd mag for a Marlin for cheaper than Walmart. So guess you never know.

How did you think they paid for all those mounts in their stores?

Once and a while I would find an item at a fair price but they seem to be higher on the majority of what they carry and try to attract you with discount coupons that probably get the price back to what it should have been in the first place. I no longer stop in Cabella's store or pay attention to their mailings

I support the smaller stores they are no more and usually less expensive and usually a lot more knowledgeable about the product. For items I find necessary to buy mail order I normally use MidSouth they are one of the lower priced sources for reloading, etc.

I have a Cabela's 25 minutes from my work, so I stop by on a weekly basis to check it out. I bought a Rem wingmaster 12 ga for $275. Browning camper $150 and a Baretta 22lr for $225. Like any store you get good with the bad, overall I'm happy with Cabela's.

I agree, Gander Mountain is high. I don't consider Cabela's a WalMart. Cabela's has quality items, nothing junk in my opinion. However, it's somewhat confusing how a buyer/supplier that large seems to be out of some standard handgun ammo. I had .380 and 9mm on order for four months and it never arrived. I finally cancelled the order. In your case, since you have found better deals elsewhere, it sure would be nice to help fellow members and post the location. :D

I bought a Garmin GPS yesterday at Cabelas. Their list price was $299, it was on sale in the store for $229, and their weekly sale paper had it listed for $169.00, which is what I paid. Could find it no where else at that price.

There is no way I would compare Cabelas to Walmart. Cabelas offers quality products at a fair price. Many times they are cheaper than Midway USA or BassPro Shop. I have bought many items online also, and they are promptly shipped and arrive as advertised.

There's a Cabela's about a mile from me. I've gotten MANY gun deals out of there since it was built about 2 yrs.. ago. New gun pricing is typical. Used gun pricing is bizarre. 66 no dash 2.5" $349, Colt Cobra nickle $400, Colt Cobra blue $300, 60-14 $349. They were as new no boxes and add +7% tax. Accessories and ammo are typically priced. The only way to get a deal on clothing is to watch their web site and buy on sale online. I am fortunate in that the store is close enough I have my purchases delivered there saving all to home delivery fees. Also I can unbox the stuff there and if I don't like it, it's immediately credited back to my card, and I'm done. Walmart is right down the street also. The quality of their clothing is now ridiculous. Jeans are the only thing still acceptable. Only problem is they think a fat guy with a 42" waist should have a max 32" inseam. I need 34" to avoid floodpants look.

I used to buy alot of fly fishing stuff there but when it comes to guns, i shop at cabelas and buy elswhere. I now have a local fly shop that i deal with. Cabelas prices are o.k but anything with their name on it is made in china and usially low quality. They *had* the best customer service in the industry but they changed their policys and are now just like everyone else. Their policys were no doubt changed because of people taking advantage of them...but alas...i buy localy now.

"If you think Cabela's is overpriced, visit Gander Mountain"

A big plus one on that. Stopped in the local GM the other day for something trivial and took a look at most of their pricing. They are out of their minds!

I frequent the same Cabela's and agree about the used gun prices. It's fun to stop in once in a while. Bass Pro in Portage seems to have better prices on ammo.

to clarify, i was not comparing cabelas to walmart in terms of quality, more in terms of size and volume of sales though nobody is as big as walmart. the items out of stock at cabelas were (1) bell & carlson medalist stock 249.95, got one from stocky's stocks in florida 217.00.(2) timney trigger from their website 5.00 less than cabelas, not much, but still less.

I like Cabelas but usually don't consider them the low price leader. I watch their sales & buy at times when I stop at the store. My usual gun stuff mail order is Midway, though I do others depending on the items. I have also used the Cabelas pick up at the store option, which is handy if you plan to go by the store. I'm not a big returner but their service is top notch, take a look at the used footwear in the bargain cave to see.

One of my better deals was a new S&W 638 for $279 2 years ago or so.

I never thought of Cabelas as the least expensive but more a place that had a fair variety of merchandise.
