I just got a text on my phone and an email from the ATF warning about the "Switches" that will make a Glock full auto.

I wonder why the sudden alerts on something that's been around for a while.

Well...just guessing here, but I suspect it could be because this particular modification is growing in popularity, especially among certain elements of our society.

In the Baltimore area, there have been a number of shootings involving modified Glocks (and so-called "ghost guns"). Many of the suspects in these crimes have been very young teens. We Forum members have a hard time imagining this sort of thing, because we obey the law, but it's a real and growing problem.

Yeah, they're so prevalent that I can imagine that some Glocks that were outfitted with "da switch" may have somehow or another (sold by an irritated mother who found it in Junior's room) wound up in the inventory and then showcase of a older dealer who didn't know what's what. (Someone who doesn't like those ugly plastic guns and prefers hand-crafted American revolvers, for instance.) I suppose one could even say it's nice of ATFE to try to educate such folks about the issue in order to prevent the awkwardness that would inevitably follow. :)

Got the same message.

Just curious, how does a person get themselves on an ATF notification list?

They are sent out to FFL holders.
I used to get Emails, sometimes recorded msg phone calls. Different topics on the emails. The phone calls were usually about a breakin to a gunshop in the vicinity.

I'd guess other license holders under the ATF umbrella get them as well as specific to their industry/trade.

...Anyone can go the ATF home page,,click on the Contact page and at the very bottom of that page you can sign up for...

I do not know what sort of things are included in those Updates.

Locally here we just had a FFL holder arrested yesterday for a straw purchase to a known felon. They also arrested the Drug felon and upon a search was charged two illegal switchs among other gun charges.

It's the first I have heard of this term but had a vibe it might be switching to auto related.

So all switches are illegal? Is it state related? Is it something made from home? I wouldn't even know what one looks like.

I'm surprised it has taken this long to issue the notice.

These devices are proof positive that just because you have the engineering nous to modify something, it does not mean that you should or proliferate the idea. If you want another example, speak to somebody who used those tuning kits on certain Ford diesels, toasting the motor in no time.

These devices have long been banned at the Federal Level, since they make a Glock fire full auto. They are popular with gang bangers and have made the news recently.

Multiple States felt the need to ban them, because the Feds declined to prosecute in the past. That's changed because of new direction and leadership at the ATF.

I have an 03. Yesterday I got a call that was listed as "possible spam" so I ignored it. No message left. When it happened 3 times in a half hour I answered it and it was "them". I listened to the message. Happy to comply.

You would be a good target for such info, as you have/had no idea what the heck the issue is and could end up with your goodies in a grinder completely by accident.

I am not a FFL holder but would like to know how to recognize one on a gun just handling it.. I guess I will start researching it, I am a revolver guy mostly. I just found it interesting the day after reading about it, it shows up on the forum.

In 2017, there was a German "tactical" shop on the NATO side of HKIA (Hamid Karzai Airport in Kabul) selling these for $75.

I've got video of a few of us playing with them on the range. I was really concerned about people considering it harmless bringing them home to the US. That's the kind of conviction that would sting.
