There appears to be a small flock of feral pigs here in upstae NY., up the road from me. D.E.C says there is no regs. about hunting or license's. They're having a tuff time killing them off.who knows about dogs and hunting hogs???

Used to hunt them up around the Chillicothe, Quanah area in Texas.
Destructive, mean, aggressive, and fearless when cornered.
You send dogs in after them be prepared to play a game of attrition.
Heck, we wouldn't even ride horses in certain areas around the Red River, they're that nasty
They breed so fast that regular hunting methods really won't even put a dent in their numbers.

They show up here every now and then, tearing up everything. I set up a corn feeder and game camera to learn when they show. Once they become regulars, get there early, keep the wind in your favor, and climb a tree. Hard to get more than one or two at once, and you'll spook the rest off for a week or so. Night time with full moon is best, season is open 24 hours, 365 days a year here.

North of Lake Okeechobee is full of hogs, many places to hunt them. Its BIG FUN to take them with hand cannons - my Model 57 with 8 3/8 barrel is lethal using 210 gr Silvertip ammo. The only problem is - thats a LOT OF MEAT, have to give most of it away:-)

In the latest issue of the DNRs hunting regulations there is a short article about feral hogs in Iowa. Seems a few have shown up, and the state wants 'em kilt dead as soon as possible. There is no license required, but they do want any kills reported. I have my doubts they're here, at least in any quantities, but heck, if I see one, I'm gonna have wild pork all year.:D

There's two kinds of states/counties in the U.S. Them that's got hogs and them that's gonna have hogs!

A small flock of feral pigs? Watch out, those flying hogs are sneaky. You'll think you are stalking a herd of regular old ground-bound hogs, when the pigs flying top cover will dive on you out of the sun, and you won't see them until it's too late!

A good night vision rig - like a quality PVS-14 - starts at around three grand. I used to have one. Mine was reserved for social matters, rather than man eating hogs, but I ended up selling it. If you want to do the night thing, the good stuff doesn't come cheap.

Unless you have hogzilla size ones (and some places do) then a .30-30 probably ought do nicely, preferably a beater one that you don't care if it gets scratched up or not. Some people like to put Eotechs on them, simply because pigs move fast and... well they will eat or maim you if they can. People eat pigs, pigs eat people, cycle of life and all that...

roarindan,
Throw some corn out in the spot you want to shoot them and set up a ground blind with the wind in your favor. Hogs have poor eyesight but excellent sense of smell. You can try building a trap and catching them.
Do a Google search on hog trapping in Texas, they have a lot of good information at HUNTING HOGS IN TEXAS AND PRODUCT MANUFACTURE TRAPPING WILD HOGS BOAR HUNTING PRODUCTS TRAPPING WILD BOAR
I have a blackmouth cur/pitbull mix dog that catches and kills hogs, she has a cut vest that she wears when hog hunting.
If I were you, I'd stick to baiting and shooting the feral hogs.
Good luck hunting "the poor man's grizzly."

If you are farming, hunt all you can then round up as many in a cage and shoot them! Then set the cage back up again, repeat, repeat.
They do lots of damage to the sugar cane crop in this area they eat the sweet stalks, when they are finished they dig up the roots of next years production.
Good luck, they breed like flies!

Hog hunting with dogs can be real hard on the dog...

Sorry to hear you have them in Keesville, a small amount have started to show up in Western part of Ulster County, near Shandaken, from what a friend reported. From my understanding, all you need in NY is a small game license, and can kill them at anytime, basically by any means. If you need help, let me know, have a group of die-hard hunters (all LEO and DEC members) that would jump at the chance to help rid them from the area.

A pack of hogs huh? Well it is close to Valentine's Day. I guess the appropriate bait will range from a box of chocolates and flowers to a bottle of Tequila.

Maybe they'll migrate south to Pottersville.
