Check out the Texas State Parks map. There is quite a few around the Austin area. Up by Waco there is a good area by Lake Waco that's run but the Corp of Engineers.

If you wish to stay close to Austin, try Pedernalas Falls State Park. Just about 30 minutes or so west of Austin.

Depends on your definition of camping and hiking. Bastrop state park needs the business. Your park use fees will go to restoring the park. Buescher, near Smithville, which was not touched by the fire, has some nice trails also. LCRA's North Shore and South Shore parks both have good camping facilities and trails. Neither of them had fire damage that I know of.

Garner State Park would probably be awesome this time of year... But if you don't want to be near anyone, I vote for Big Bend State Park. You will not see another campfire or hear anyone at your campsite.. The only negative is I dont think they have hookups.

I've been to several of these. Enchanted Rock is not a very big area. I'd say Lost Maples is nomally the least crowded.

+1 on Big Bend. It's farther to drive, but after you get out on the rim trails you'll be all alone. Hint: go UP the mountain using the horse path toward the meadow. It's a much, MUCH, shallower grade. Then come down the steep way. Haven't been there in years, but the Rangers used to leave five gallon jugs of water at key points. You can't count on them, but they're real lifesavers if they're there.
