Because if can, this would be mine.

I've been looking for a clean model 649/49 since I foolishly sold a 649 I had years ago but they've been hens teeth locally. This one was hanging up in the "gun rack in the back" of my favorite LGS, where they put stuff when their cases out front are overflowing. I spied it when I was chatting with an associate and the door was open.

Nickel, model 49 no dash, mid 80s vintage, tight as a drum, excellent shape. $450 plus tax? Where's the 4473…

Got it home, stripped her down, gave her and good clean/oil, 2 passes with mothers mag and 1 pass with Ren Wax. Swapped the original wood with a pair of Bigmtnmans' handmade Antelope stocks and a polished t-grip. Totes well in an out of business International Handgun Leather horsehide pocket holster. A perfect backup to my main BBQ piece, a nickel 13-3 3" with some more carved headgear.

Do you have a BBQ J frame? I'd love to see it!

No reason a J-frame can't be a BBQ gun, it just needs a fancy holster. My J-frame is not a BBQ gun, it's my pocket gun, not polished, just factory stainless 640-1 goodness.

A S& W is one heck of a great gun whether for carry, home protection of shooting at the range which I mostly do, Congrats !

I could send my S&W J Centennial 640 back to S&W and get it engraved.. It is a thought.

Those are beautiful BBQ & hibachi cook out guns. I could use a nickel plated for bright stainless steel J frame with a pin barrel, of course.

Of course a J-frame can be a BBQ gun! And your nickel Model 49 is extremely nice with those elk antler stocks. However, as previously stated, you need a nice tooled cross draw holster for it so that you can show it off. If you have it in a pocket or ankle holster, who's going to see it! LOL!

Without question--yes!

Here's a five-screw Chiefs Special with a few modifications.

Forum members did the leather and bodywork.

Craig Spegel mounted the $5 gold piece in his boot stocks.

A friend named it "the ultimate vanity Chiefs Special."

If you had not already stated that you purchased it used I would have commented that it appears to have just been unpacked from it's factory box. Even more so were it wearing the original grips although those it's wearing are very complimentary, proud find, indeed!

A J frame? sure, how about an I frame?

This is a nickle baby chief with Sambar stocks.

And here is a well loved Chief's Special in a floral carved holster and a Tyler polished aluminum grip adapter.

Of course a J-frame can be a BBQ gun

I have the 39th Production Model 649 produced

This is one of 25 hand selected revolvers that was embellished by the Factory to honor the introduction of the 1st stainless steel Bodyguard. In addition to the Factory engraving the African Elephant ivory stocks were also provided with the revolver. This is the best Factory Ivory I have

However I will also sometimes carry two of my PC 940 Specials. I wear these in a New York Reload holster made by Bell Charter Oak. Very often it is the holster that gets the most attention, until I pull one of the revolvers out and people realize that they're chambered for 356 TSW
